98213 2002-11-12 23:51:00 Debian. Depends on much memory you have though. gibler (49)
98214 2002-11-13 01:33:00 Any distribution will do . :D They are all the same Linux . There are different installation scripts . There may be different settings for the kernel compilation . But they are all Linux .

RedHat and Mandrake are the "friendliest" installations . Debian is intended more for people who like playing with operating systems .

However, Mandrake requires Pentium processors, whereas RedHat doesn't insist . I don't know about the latest RedHat, but it seems to have a selection of kernels . . . and will even handle dual-processor machines .

What will limit you is memory and disk . The later versions need at least 1 . 5 GB of disk, and to run the GUIs, the more memory the bettter . You will want at least 96 MB ram . There are older versions available . RedHat 6 . 2 will install on sma;ller machines, though you would need to compile the kernel to take advantage of the Pentium . But that's not a major operation . And you can install the "i386" version and it will run perfectly on a Pentium .

98215 2002-11-13 08:36:00 Knoppix requires at least 80 Megs RAM (Reccommended by the PC World CD.. I saw it in there somewhere).

Any Pentium proccessor will do, it may take a bit longer the less RAM you've got, but try out Knoppix on them and see how you like it!

98216 2002-11-13 08:38:00 Mandrake 8.0/8.2 will run ok on a P166 with 64MB of ram although the office applications are a bit slow to load. Dolby Digital (160)
98217 2002-11-14 06:08:00 XSolutions offer a version of Mandrake optimised for a 486 which would probably run quite nicely on a p75 - they're reasonably priced too :)
