98442 2002-11-14 03:49:00 Just picked up a floppy drive. I ordered a Panasonic but was given a Mitsumi and the guy told me it was "the same thing".

A Panasonic in my other computer has given me good service so if this one works and works well I'll be happy, but should I be concerned about this Mitsumi brand? I don't know anything about them.

98443 2002-11-14 03:57:00 Mitsumi have been around a while now . They are Japanese in origin, as are Panasonic . Were certainly around in the early 90's

Shouldnt be an issue as to quality, given that floppy drives are seldom used now anyway .

Apart from emergency booting your new computer every other day, that is . . .

98444 2002-11-14 04:05:00 An American site lists a Mitsumi OEM floppy at $10; a Panasonic OEM floppy at $14. It describes the Panasonic as a "direct drive long life" drive. But I think all 3.5" floppy drives are direct drive. :D

They are a commodity item. As long as you're not paying Panasonic price for Mitsumi product. (I wondered if they were parts of the same company, but it's Panasonic-Mitsushita-(something else).

The Panasonic "other name" is ... Matsushita

I think the parts guy took the easy way out just saying they were one and the same. I would check to see you are not paying Panasonic prices for something thats not Panasonic Susan. Sure, there might only be a few dollars in it, but there are consumer laws in this country, and on principal, I would tell them to stick it and go elsewhere for the rest of your stuff - if you are playing the higher price that is.

There are plenty of other suppliers in NZ

98446 2002-11-14 06:53:00 Most things are all much of a muchness now. You NEVER know exactly what it is you are buying. With something like a floppy drive it doesn't matter so much. But with a graphics card, be upset if they try to fob you off with something else.

It's like oil companies. You can buy oil from Company A, it's there oil. You can buy oil from Company B but it is actually Company A's oil, that is unless A and B have had a run in so that Company B is now using Company C's oil.

98447 2002-11-14 09:42:00 I think Mitsumi are quite a bit OEM supplier, my CD-RW and floppy drives are Mitsumi .

The CD-RW has worked perfectly with zero coasters until it met melody disks .

The only problem I've had with the floppy is it had trouble reading/writing if it hasn't been used for a while, but it comes right .

98448 2002-11-14 09:59:00 If this is the start of your troubles getting the right components together . . . . Oh dear!

A word of advice, Susan

When you get your CPU, if it has the words:
ZILOG
Z-80
2 mhz

on it, and its a funny shape, its probably not the right one .

And your motherboard should not have "(c) Sinclair ZX-80" on it either, or it would be suspect .

Just trying to help . . .

98449 2002-11-14 10:49:00 Hey don't hassle the ZX-80.

darned teacher still hasn't let me borrow his spectrum for the weekend. Fine to borrow the digital camera, but there's no way he'll let anyone touch that.

98450 2002-11-14 20:00:00 Geez godfather, you sure know how to put the frighteners in a girl . Must be all the practice you get . :O

Now where did I put your address, I've got a big bag full of bits for you to put together for me . :D

I can't make up my mind what to do about this floppy drive . I don't like having a fast one pulled over me and this Styles PC place did the same with the keyboard . Granted, the keyboard is a better model (same price on their website for both though) BUT it wasn't what I ordered .

The FDD came in an unsealed plastic bag, ie not all packed up like my CD-ROM was (from another place) . It doesn't look used though . Maybe I should take the FDD back and go spend another $9 at Computer Future for the genuine Panasonic or Sony drive?

Yes, I know it is only a floppy drive but I do bring work home on floppies occasionally so I want it to do the job . It's far less hassle than emailing .

This Styles PC supplier is supposed to have a good name at the OCNZ site but I have never come across this sort of treatment before . The guy didn't even give my husband a receipt when he collected those things - "the printer was down" . He's supposed to be emailing a receipt but I still haven't got it .

Hmmmm I got my adsl modem from Starlyte last week. I orderd the cheapie PCI one at $122 because that's all The Dragon would let me spend with Christmas coming up. I had been let down by a trader on Trade Me so I stipulated that I really needed it the next day.

They sent me an external modem / router worth twice as much. It actually suits my set up much better. Am I happy with Starlyte? You betcha!
