98279 2002-11-13 02:20:00 Hi all, I run a site for our kid's cricket club
http://whitbycricket.orcon.net.nz
and I would like to put in a page that has thumbnails linked to pictures.

Is there a good programme around to do this easily (Win98SE or Linux)

TIA

98280 2002-11-13 02:22:00 Microsoft Frontpage is really easy for this type of thing crozier (2004)
98281 2002-11-13 02:41:00 Thanks :)

Unfortunately orcon doesn't support MS scripts etc, so I have stayed away from FP

I'm currently doing most of the work in notepad or kate (using html) and occasionally I use Netscape composer (both windows or linux versions) but I haven't seen a gallery maker in it.

By the way, I can't get Gftp to work (using the same settings as I use for coffeecup Freeftp in windows). Any suggestions for an easy to use ftp program for linux?

Thanks :D :D :D

98282 2002-11-13 02:50:00 I've found plain old commandline FTP perfectly easy to use. Do "man ftp".
Then "ftp whoever.net.nz", and see what happens. It should ask for user name, password. Then "cd where/your'files/should/go" (relative to the "pub" directory). "dir" will show what's already there. "binary" or "ascii" to select what sort of file your'e moving. "put filename" will send a file. "mput fn*" wil send wildcarded files. "help" to the prompt will remind you of the commands. Easy ;-)

98283 2002-11-13 02:52:00 I'm pretty sure that you can use Frontpage without MS Scripts, you jus tmiss out on some of the extra features. crozier (2004)
98284 2002-11-13 02:57:00 You are just determined to get me to spend time in a terminal aren't you! ;) ;) :D :D

Next you'll be telling me I can do the gallery thing (including thumbnails) easily from the command line.

BTW modprobe certainly let the scsi card be recognised, but as yet sane still doesn't see the scanner (sane-find-scanner does find the card tho!)

NB - this isn't a question at this time as I haven't yet RTFM for sane properly

98285 2002-11-13 03:44:00 There is nothing wrong with the command line ftp in linux. I use it a heck of a lot. It's the easiest way to transfer files from school and home. Much more reliable than using attachments on emails. If I upload from home I can just grab them via http at school.

To upload from school I first have to PuTTY into the server because the firewall blocks port 21.

The trick to remember is how to get to the desired directory.

First of all, ftp to open up the ftp client
open whitbycricket.orcon.net.nz
cd whitbycricket.orcon.net.nz
cd htdocs

now you're in the location you need to be.

98286 2002-11-13 04:17:00 What program did you use to create the site?

Thumbnails are smaller versions of the bigger picture - possibly cropped differently.

So... open your graphics programs crop and resize your image.

To show them in a page just create a table and put the links to the images in it.

It also pays to keep the filenames consistent.
eg ge.jpg (big picture), ge-t.jpg (the thumbnail version). I would then call the page the bigger picture opens in ge.htm. This keeps the files together and easy to identify for maintenance.

A small point - if you are showing photos of the kids watch how much information you give about them and warn the kids about Stranger Danger. A name with a photo and location could make it a bit too easy for those with bad intentions.

98287 2002-11-13 04:24:00 Oh, and if you want a working example - here (www.extremetrampoline.co.nz)

I made the original site and put the first 5 photos in. The site owner has now taken it over and added more photos (but he needs a bit more practice with his graphics program)

98288 2002-11-13 04:27:00 Mostly used html in a text editor (learning quickly as I went!)

Thanks for the comments about Stranger Danger - highly relevant as we advertise where we play etc!

Maybe I will simply post without giving names :)
