| 98659 | 2002-11-15 00:17:00 | FAQ # 5 Why does scandisk/defrag stop after only 10%? For Windows The first 10% of the system Defrag is dedicated to scandisk, if it's enabled. It'll stop after that because there would be other programs running in the background. Firstly, you should restart your PC in Safe Mode (see FAQ #20). Look down the bottom right hand corner or the screen. Everything needs to go. Try left or right-clicking on anything that may be there and exiting the program, Including Anti-Virus software. Close down all open progs that you can. If it still doesn't work, press ctrl+alt+del and check, really, you only need systray and explorer. Anything else, will likely stop it. Open programs will always cause it to re-start because when a program is open it is writing (most of the time) to the HDD, and because the computer is defragmenting the HDD, if you are writing to it, intentionally or not, it will re-start to account for the new data, or edited data, and try to defrag that also. This will most likely take quite a while, Graham L suggests: "You don't get to use your car while the oil is being changed. Have a cup of a beverage of your choice while the computer is being serviced". Basically, doing anything will restart it. Also, note that when defraggin large files, it may appear to have stopped, dont worry, it will resume continue after a few minutes, depending on the file size. After that, re-boot to re-open all your start-up progs and anti-virus software etc. hopefully the re-boot may be a bit faster after doing a de-frag. Another thing to note for Win2K and WinXP Users, It reccommends that you have at least 15% free HDD space, so delete all those unwanted progs before you begin, as this will help spped up the proccess because there's less on the drive to defrag. For Linux: If you are using linux, you do not need to worry about defragmentation, as linux takes care of itself. |

Scandisk stops at 10% because it needs to read the entire disk to determine which cluster information needs to go where, how long it's gonna take etc. The %age bar will only continue on when defrag starts moving the cluster information around. |
