| 98654 | 2002-11-14 22:12:00 | I changed my MB last night to a Soltek 75KAV because the Asus A7V-133 stopped turning the PSU on and off. Now the PC won't boot. It passes POST and can see the drives but stops at a point when the HD is supposed to boot with the last message being "Verifying DMI Pool Data" (waited 5 min and got no further). I can boot off a floppy and read the drives and linux will work fine with the Linux Boot floppy but the HD won't boot. If I set the HD to boot 1st it just stops, if I set the floppy to boot 1st and don't have one in it passes to the HD0 and stops. I would have thought that if it didn't have a boot sector it would ask to install boot disk. Any ideas? Wayne |

Then I put in another video card in case there was a driver issue. I also tried the hard drive in another PC to make sure the hard drive worked and it did For me - the problem was the hard drive - I ghosted it to another one and then all worked fine |

| 98656 | 2002-11-15 02:19:00 | does this help? (found on microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion newsgroup). > i installed a new amd motherboard/processor to replace my > p3 500. problem is that win98se doesn't like it. getting > windows protection error. restart computer. > so with not avail, i've reinstalled my old > processor/board and sure enough it starts up like old. > Next step is to figure out how to get win98 to accept the > new board. The step you missed is that you did not "inform" the operating system of the removal of the old motherboard, thus preparing it for the installation of the new motherboard. What you needed to do was: 1 Create a Boot Disk, making sure it includes your CD-ROM drivers. 2 Go into Device Manager and remove everything. Repeat, everything. This is critical in preventing Windows from thinking that the old motherboard, chipset and system devices - now gone - are still present. 3 Shut down and Power down. Then you should read and follow the instructions in the manual to install your new motherboard and chipset drivers. Then boot into the BIOS setup and do whatever you need to do there. When you boot into Windows, Windows will then do it's setup, and detect all your plug-and-play and legacy devices, and install the required devices and drivers. Then you can install your video drivers and reset your resolution. |

| 98657 | 2002-11-15 02:48:00 | Considering that I couldn't get the PSU to turn on before I change the MB (which is why I changed the MB) this is a bit of a bugger. The PC had Win98 Win2k Linux installed with linux booting via floppy only (not on a boot manager). If I use try to re-install win98 it starts up but then complains that there is a NTFS partition and stops. A simple job turned hard. I don't really want to re-format though 98 and 2k were installed in seperate partitions with another data partition so I suppose I could format the 98 partition and re-install. Thoughts? |
