99061 2002-11-18 03:30:00 Well the Duron processor is faster than the Celeron processor, not just in MHz rating but actual performance.

But it's probably worth the extra to get the RAM, video, CDRW upgrades.

But find out what the actual components are going to be. THey could well be crap parts anyway.

99062 2002-11-18 03:33:00 So AMD Have it with both of their proccessors (Greater performance per Mhz).

I though the list in performance went a little like this, with faster being top:
AMD Athlon XP
Intel Pentium 4
Intel Xeon
Intel Celeron
AMD Duron

If all had the same Mhz Rating that was... Maybe Im wrong though! Perhaps Duron deserves a littl emore credit than Ive been giving it..

No, the Duron doesn't compare to the the P4. but the Athlon XP series certainly do, although the clock rating gets a bit muddied here. I have an Athlon 2000 XP which is supposed to run equivelant to a P4 2ghz. But the clock speed is only about 1.7. I think it comes down to the way it handles data. The big difference was the price, the Athlon was about $300 cheaper!

The Duron compares favourably to the Celerons though.

99064 2002-11-18 03:57:00 Mmm... and compared to P4's, the pricing is hundreds cheaper..
It looks like I'll be buying the Duron MBoard.. its just that the P4 Mboard was only 50 Bucks cheaper than a celeron.. long story, but the prices were weird...

99065 2002-11-18 07:38:00 Clock to clock the list should run.
AthlonXP
Xeon
Duron
P4
Celeron

The P4 is currently the fastest only because it runs at 3.06Ghz however an AthlonXP 2800+ which runs at 2.2GHz is very close. However the Price dif is about US$300. The Xeon is quite fast but costs ALOT more atleast 2x. The Duron is quite fast and beats a Celeron of equal clock speed the new celerons (1.7Ghz+) are acctually slower in many tasks than the origional celeron (less than 1.3ghz) and a lot slower than the newer ones. The New celerons don't start to beat the Durons till they reach about 2Ghz.

99066 2002-11-18 08:02:00 It all depends on what the comp is going to be used for and what components it is going to be teamed up with.

In most cases an AthlonXP is the better choice than the p4. A Xeon is just not needed for most things, and the Duron is best budget chip.
