| 99051 | 2002-11-17 22:42:00 | I think the idea of emailing a few PC retailers to see what they can do is a good one. Try to steer clear of places like PC company, noel leemings, and the like, the prices at these places are too high. Take a look at the companies on www.pricespy.co.nz , these are all new zealand based, on-line retailers, which tend to be cheaper and better quality. Start with a basic system, say a duron 1000, 32Mb graphics card, 256Mb RAM, on-board sound, speakers, 15" monitor, keyboard and mouse, cdrom drive. If you have some money left over, grab a couple of games as well. If, after a few months, you find the computer is really well used, you may want to invest in a few extra bits and pieces, like a cdrw and maybe trade for a better monitor etc... If you are still interested, I could put together some prices for a few systems to see if they are within your budget... Craig. |

Pentium III, 1000MHz, 128MB SDRAM, 20GB, CDReWriter, Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, Compaq 15" Monitor, Windows Millennium $999 +GST - 1 year warranty Might be a wee bit over your budget?? I'm sure the guys at PB Tech could do a quote for you on your budget. You can email their friendly sales guy, they are usually pretty quick with replies. |

| 99055 | 2002-11-18 01:32:00 | Wow what feedback :D - Certainly food for thought!! Big Thanks to you all for the advice and help ;-) O.K the Remanufactured ones are all gone - finnito!!!! This was what i was looking at their: PC Company Re-manufactured RM DUR 1300B AMD Duron 1300MHz 256MB RAM 32MB Card 40GB HDD 8xCDRW Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition @ $1299 However i have been offered this along the same lines with a 1 year warranty: Celeron 1000MHZ - 300MHZ less than the first deal 512MB RAM - Twice the RAM than first deal 64MB Card - Twice the MB card 40GB HDD - Same size HDD 32xCDRW - Four times higher cdrw Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition Plus Software which i am finding out about tonight @ $1500 The price they originally wanted was $1800 and i got them down to $1500 - So we will be deciding tonight ??? I think it sounds quite reasonable???? comparing the $300 difference and what extra we would get for that $300 difference. With regards to needing/getting a cdwriter, the fact is that we are buying for a child, but there are also 2 adults to consider who will be using it too. We figured that this is the once and only time we will have the money to spend so why not get something with the maximum capabilities rather than six months down the track being faced with "I need a cdwriter" and also with these better specs it will be a lot longer before an upgrade is needed I hope. As somebody else said the kids have to have the latest games these days, so something without a decent Graphics Card and grunt will be useless for these games - I don't know?? I am no professional but i thought best value for money would be the way to go and if that includes a cdwriter all the better. Anyway thanks again to all for the help and advice and feedback welcome on weather this new system sounds worthwhile most welcome. |

Go with the second PC if you can spare the extra $$$, otherwise, I guess you should go with the first, but I would be geared towards the first. |

| 99058 | 2002-11-18 02:59:00 | I've read a great many reviews saying that the duron is know as AMD's budget proccessor, and that Celeron, while it's Intels lower-cost proccessor compared to the P4 and Athlon XP, still manages to out-perform the Duron in most tasks. I'll see if I can find a comparison.... But dude, do you not read the reveiw in the PCW mag? | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||
| 99059 | 2002-11-18 03:23:00 | > But dude, do you not read the reveiw in the PCW mag? No I didn't, but thanks for calling me a dude - a first time for everything (must be my age) ;) I fell really young now . Take a look at this: . tomshardware . com/cpu/02q2/020612/celeron1 . 8-11 . html#conclusion_clock_speed_sells" target="_blank">www17 . tomshardware . com The Celeron is now very old technology and was originally another one of Intels many mistakes . I guess this is another one of the age old arguments like 'my spectrum is better than your C64' . Well time showed that they were all wrong - the BBC Micro was better than all of them! |

| 99060 | 2002-11-18 03:27:00 | Hmm... That's interesting, although Im sure I read a reveiw, but that was in 3D graphics, and proccessors have been proven to have their qualities in different areas. Perhaps the Duron one would be better, and you can upgrade the lower specs of it if you wish!? Hmm.. Maybe then I should buy the Duron Mboard I saw the other day rather than the P4 I had my eye on that was gonna cost a whole lot more... I'll see, but thanks for pointing that out to me! |
