99002 2002-11-16 21:56:00 HI,
I was just wondering...
is it possible to make your own RAM?
Is there a site, where you can order Boards, and chips, and put them together yourself?
i no this may sound stupid - its just a thought i had.
cheers

99003 2002-11-16 22:02:00 Not *really* possible.

While it could be possible to import the chips, and even make the PC board, the cost would be HUGE, in comparison to the low cost of sticks today

The components are SMD (Surface Mount Devices) which require specialised assembly equipment, anti-static rooms etc.

99005 2002-11-17 01:59:00 I've done it . . . 2 boards . One has 8 kbytes, the other has 4 kbytes . They cost about $250 and $300 for the kits . There were a lot of soldered joints for the 40 or so sockets on the 4k board . The 8k used more modern 4kx1 chips and so it was a lot easier .

That was about 1976 . These days, it's cheaper to buy them fully built up . :D

99006 2002-11-17 03:16:00 Graham, I have achieved it by "bricklaying" (piggybacking the chips, with the 'select' line bent out and hard-wired. From 64k I took it up to 448k

Cost hundreds....(1983)
