2002-11-16 05:43:00 | Has anyone got the WIN modem in the old Acer Extensa 50* laptop (Mines a 501DX), to work under any Linux distribution?? In my case my old 501DX (P266MMX, 128 RAM, 3GB HDD ,which had survived many nocks to the head) has retired to my internet router for my small LAN. It currently runs WIN ME and MS's Internet connection sharing, however I would like to convert it over to Linux (either RedHat or Debian), so this afternoon I poped the PCW Knopix CD in... and it ran perfectly, even detected my USB LAN adaptor! However it didnt detect my modem which uses a Lucent WIN modem chipset, (unfortunately I can get the chipset number because Acer have glued stickers & a protective gaud over the internal modem module, I have email Acer to try and get the chipset number, fingers crossed!). If anyone has been able to get their Lucent WIN modem in their Acer portable (or any other portable) to work under Linux please let me know :) Cheers Liam

2002-11-16 07:35:00 | www.heby.de Download the drivers from there and you should be up and running in no time. (I use them myself and I've had no problems at all) | segfault (655) | |
2002-11-16 11:04:00 | Thx for that segfault. Only the fun doesnt stop there! They don provide a RPM for RedHat 7.3 only RedHat 6 & 8, and I dont know how to compile the source :_| But wait it get better, the DSE RTL8150 based USB LAN adaptor which works with Knopix doesnt work with RedHat 7.3 so even if I did get the modem to go I'm still up a creek without a paddle :_| To make matters worse DSE who advertise that the USB LAN adaptor comes with drives for Linux actually doesnt, just a .c file and I dont know how to compile that either :_| The DSE LAN card is a more pressing problem, do you know how to compile .c files for RedHat 7.3 ?:| And to think DSE got a big article in the herald on how they were promoting linux the other day X-( X-( X-( Cheers Liam

2002-11-16 20:26:00 | Could I recommend that you upgrade to Red Hat 8.0? There were a lot of changes between 7.3 and 8.0. (The compiler is a big change - from the somewhat broken 2.96 to 3.2) The source is very very easy to compile. The LTmodem package doesn't use the traditional method of compiling but it is still very easy. I hope you don't mind me only giving you a hint here, but I find the best way to learn Linux is to try and find as much about something as you can - Thats how I learn't and it worked pretty well. So what I'll do here is to get you started. When you're in the directory with the source, run this command "tar xvzf filename.tar.gz " where filename.tar.gz is the name of the file. (You can start typing the name of the file and press [Tab] and it will complete it for you. Now we move into the untar'ed directory "cd foldername" again, where foldername is the name of the folder that was created. Run "ls" to see the contents of the directory. There is a file called 1ST-READ (Normally this would be called README) Now, run this command "cat 1ST-READ". This outputs the file README to the console. You won't be able to read what was at the very top, so while holding [Shift], press [Page Up]. This will take you back up the console to view the very top of the output. There are three simple commands here that you will find in the section starting "FINALLY". You will need to be root to execute the commands (Not strictly true, but in the interests of simplicity) As for your LAN adaptor, it sounds to be like it is supported in a later kernel (Which Knoppix uses) but you are not. To compile if, you just need to run 'make' in the directory on the USB LAN driver source. However, it will take a bit of work to get it going. (Hence me recommending an upgrade) Well, have fun! :)

2002-11-16 21:24:00 | Thx again for the help segfault. Here's what I'm going to do: Plan A: Compile the modem driver, if it works use the modem to connect to the net, download the latest kernel etc. using the RedHat upgrade agent and hopefully get the LAN to work. Plan B: If plan a fails; download RedHat 8 (on my 56k :_|) and install it, then download the pre compiled modem drivers for RedHat 8. Thx for all the help you have given me. Liam

2002-11-16 23:30:00 | Tries the instructions in first read segfault, and Im still lost at sea. I went into the text console, navigated to the correct directory and typed in build_module as per the instructions, but nothing happened. I then tried clicking on the build_module shell script in the directory that the file were unzipped to, still nothing happened, I then right clicked the build_module file and selected open with>other, then ticked run as terminal and clicked ok. That seemed to work (it ran in the terminal window anyway) until I got to the part that said "To be gin compilation of .o and .o, Enter", I pressed enter and the console window closed?? What did I do wrong?? Cheers Liam

2002-11-16 23:37:00 | I'm not sure why the console closed but you need to run "./build_module" rather than build_module. This is because it is a script. When you run "build_module" it looks for the command "build_module" in the various /bin and /sbin directories. | segfault (655) | |
2002-11-16 23:47:00 | THAT WORKED!!! Im runing ./ltinst2 now, will let you know how it goes. :D:D:D Liam
