99169 2002-11-17 02:56:00 Hello
I am thinking of buying one of the new DSE router adsl modems with a 4 port 10/100 switch next week.

Currently I have a Nokia PCI adsl modem and 3 computers on my network ( 4 port hub) also internet connection sharing so all computers can use the internet.

when I uninstall the PCI modem should I also uninstall internet connection sharing?

99170 2002-11-17 03:07:00 You will not need ICS with a router, so yes uninstall it.

I use an Alcatel ADSL router, makes access a breeze.

I also use Zone alarm firewall should I continue to use this I find it helpfulll when software I use tries to access the net and I can stop it

I also feel safer ;-) when I look at the log files and see the port scans and attack I have received during the last year

99172 2002-11-17 03:28:00 You can continue to use ZA.
If the ADSL router uses NAT addressing (Network Address Translation) then you won't need a firewall for incoming, the router acts as a hardware firewall.
ZA will monitor outgoing, but I don't use a firewall, just run AdAware now and then.

99173 2002-11-17 03:30:00 I see it does support NAT.

Thats a REALLY good price!

99175 2002-11-17 03:45:00 GF, how secure is NAT as a firewall? Is it enough to protect business records? wotz (335)
99176 2002-11-17 03:52:00 I am led to believe its good. I wondered that myself, so did a bit of searching, and it seems to be quite effective for inward by anything I could see.

I know of one company, where I demonstrated how vulnrable their system was with a PCI ADSL modem, they went to their professional IT support company, who installed an ADSL router with NAT.

The only thing you can see coming inward is the router.

If the user is using a properly configured, high quality software firewall they don't need a router.
Even if you share ADSL with 2pcs, a properly configured software firewall will fully stop incoming intrusions and the host computer will even remain "stealth". You can not stealth a connection with a hardware NAT/Hardware firewall.

99178 2002-11-17 06:05:00 Just remember to not have the router to default to having the password in the password box.

I know of one chch business that had it set up like that. I let them know and they've fixed it now. But there must be some dodgy cable installers and the like that don't warn of security issues.
