Lame MP3 3.93 Codec
Following the great history of GNU naming, LAME originally stood for LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder. LAME started life as a GPL'd patch against the dist10 ISO demonstration source, and thus was incapable of producing an mp3 stream or even being compiled by itself. But in May 2000, the last remnants of the ISO source code were replaced, and now LAME is the source code for a fully GPL'd MP3 encoder, with speed and quality to rival all commercial competitors.

Codec Chips Target PC Peripheral Video Applications
LSI Logic has introduced two single-chip multi-format audio/video codecs that will allow consumers to capture video content from any analog/digital camcorder, VCR or TV tuner and relay the content to any PC equipped with a USB 2.0 connection. Content can then be captured, edited, and archived on a CD, DVD, Flash card, or DV tape.
The company's new DMN-8150 codec offers full support for the MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and low bit-rate MPEG-4 compression standards, while the new SoC-based DMN-8100 codec offers a higher level of integration by incorporating both iEEE1394 link and DV codec functionality. Capable of converting standard DV-25 digital video input to MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 compression files in real time, the new devices are currently being demonstrated at COMDEX 2002 in Las Vegas.
"With the recent surge of DVD recordable drives in the PC space, consumers want a quick and easy way to edit their videos and author their own DVDs," said senior marketing director Bob Saffari in a prepared statement. "Using plug-and-play products enabled by the feature rich DMN-8100 or 8150 solutions, consumers now have capability and flexibility to create DVDs or share their videos with friends and family over the Internet."
The new chips are based on LSI Logic's multi-format DoMiNo architecture, which has been designed to deliver full-screen video as well as audio that has been encoded in the AAC, MP3, and AC3 file formats.
The LSI Logic DMN-8100 is currently available at a price of $50 each in 10K quantities, while the DMN-8150 is priced at $35 each for 10K volume orders. In addition, the company offers a complete reference design for the new devices.

AMD runs 64-bit MS Windows OS on K8
AMD is showing off a prototype 64-bit Windows OS running on its upcoming 64-bit Opteron processors. OK, so it's jam tomorrow, but the fact that AMD is showing this in public means that tomorrow is not too far away.
The demo units can be seen in action at Comdex Fall, Las Vegas which opens for business today, and at Supercomputing 2002, which also kicks off in Baltimore today.
The Comdex boxes have an ancient Egyptian flavour - they come from Texas start-up Newisys (pronounced New Isis), which is building a business around AMD Opteron servers, branded Khepri "after the Egyptian god associated with the sunrise, the one represented by a man with a scarab's head".
The demo units are running Information Server (IIS), 64-bit Terminal Services and 64-bit Microsoft Internet Explorer. Also they're running 32-bit Office XP over the ProtoWin-64 - the demo shows interoperability between the 32-bit and 64-bit apps, AMD says.
At Supercomputing 2002, AMD is showing a 4-way Opteron box running ProtoWin-64 and 32-bit Fluent 6.0 computational fluid dynamics software.

Pentium 4 chips to get 800MHz system buses
Intel Roadmaps Support DDR 400 while HT added to 2.40GHz chips
We've known for some time that the Springdale-G and Springdale-P chipsets might support 667MHz but now Intel has upped the ante by saying it will support Northwood Pentium 4s with an 800MHz front side bus.
That changes all the rules of the game and is doubtless a reaction to 800MHz Hypertransport (HT) chips from AMD that will arrive next year.
That has emerged from the latest roadmaps we saw on a rare visit to the Porcupine over the weekend.
The 667MHz front side bus for Northwood and Springdale is now dead, and will support DDR 400 memory, in a faster than expected move. Intel also now feels it can produce additional processor speeds for hyperthreading technology introduced last week.

CDex 1.50 Beta 8
Betanews - CDex is an application which is able to record audio tracks from a CD-ROM, and save those files to disk in a standard WAV file. CDex can extract the data directly from an Audio CD, which is generally a called an Audio CD Ripper or CDDA utility. It reads the digital audio data directly from the disc, which can be stored in either a WAV file or a MP3 sound file.
Changes in Current Version:
* Exclude ' character to determine word in modify track name
* Fixed problem: on some CDs the track length was not calculated correctly
* Updated several language file
* Selecting track after editting a couple of track names was not working properly
* Don't auto shutdown when abort/cancel button has been pressed
* Switch back to sorted genre combo list, to ease the search of genres
* Removed CDDB default servers, since they won't work anymore
* Removed several language files, added a special WEB page with latest language files
* Added TLEN (track length) ID3V2 tag field
* Made the buttons in the right hand side toolbar a bit more descriptive
* Reset track offset (to zero) when inserting a new CD
* Fixed problems with FLAC external encoder, however, still have to specify the output filename, thus the proper parameter string is %"1 -o %2" and set the extension to FLAC
* Don't write default ogg vorbis comment tag when the comment string is empty
