2002-11-19 01:31:00 | Im going to need to buy a graphics card for my new PC. I've ordered the Case and PSU, but I'm going to be running a DVD-ROM off it, and want a Graphics card that'll let me play Unreal Tournament 2003, and also do TV In and Out so I can watch DVD's. Another question. I hadn't though about a SoundCard. I just want something basic to get out stereo sound (Not neccesarily surround, but stereo) to my TV or Home Theatre System, using RCA plugs I think. I'd like some suggestions for both, and godfather seems to know about how to hook up the sound. How would I go about that? Thanks guys Chilling_Silence

2002-11-19 01:46:00 | recently just brought "Leadtek Geforce 4 Ti4200 (WinFast A250 LE TD-MyVIVO Edition) 128MB DDR, TV-Out, DVI-Out & Video Capture." I would reckonmend it to anyone , i play UT2003 on it flawlessly and convert the odd tv program to MPEG. It will easliy do everything you want and costs about $430. You didn't specify a price so i dont know if its too expensive, otherwise have a look at a ATI Radeon 8500 128mb DDR Ram with VIVO. later

2002-11-19 01:51:00 | Okay, Looking for a budget card.... hehe, aiming for around 1/3 that, maybe upto $150 on Pricespy?! | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2002-11-19 04:35:00 | Arh . . . sorry about that . perhaps a Geforce 4 MX 440 is more what your after . (a friend of mine plays UT2003 on his, look nice) . You could have a look at a ATI Radeon 7500, but i don't know how well that will play UT2003 . I think its going to be nearly impossiable to get one with VIVO, most cards do come with video out thou . You won't need the TV In feature to watch DVD's so perhaps for the moments its worth skipping . If you decide later you want TV In you always get a TV encoder card there about $150 . (plus you get a few extra niffy features) The third GeForce4 MX440 on the list at price spy looks good and a bit closer to your price range: CardExpert GeForce4 MX440 64Mb $146 . 25 It probably worth having a hunt round at local shops and asking what deals they can do you, perhaps buy all your parts there and ask for a discount? I dont know much about sound, but the soundblaster live's have always appealed to me . Sounds like your upgrading you PC? why not get a motherboard with good onboard sound? some have 6 . 1channel sound . I think you can pick up a SB Live for $99 inc GST . Any of the other cards are generally as good as onboard sound on most modern motherboards and probably not worth the cash .

2002-11-19 05:05:00 | I use an MX460, it has VIVO It has both RCA and S-Video connectors, in and out. Never tried running a DVD through it, as far as I am aware they will be lower resolution than a stand alone DVD player. For sound I just use a cheap A4 tech subwoofer / 2 x satellite speakers But as I have a 300 w RMS Panasonic Dolby prologic surround sound stereo (50 CD changer) I don't need the PC for sound.

2002-11-19 21:38:00 | So you guys would suggest a GeForce 4 MX 440 upwards?! SB!Live DE 5.1 looks good, or something along those lines.. Did you say pricing was round a hundred bucks locally?! Pricespy has an Austek PCI Card 6 channel for 31.50 from www.pricespy.co.nz And being in Auckland, that'd be great. (Actually, its not $28 on their site!) So, because it's six channel I take it I just have to hook up the stereo, but my stereo uses RCA connections, is that what this will be? Please excuse the ignorance on the subject, This is all very new grounds for me, but I guess I have to start somewhere. Many thanks Chilling_Silence BTW, VI can wait I guess. Get this down pat and then Ill move onwards

2002-11-19 21:48:00 | Best option for you is Leadtek A170 (GF4 MX440) VIVO and SB Live 5.1 and if budget can't stretch that far .. u can still get a cheap 5.1 sound card using Yamaha S-YXG50 chipset for $45 :) But the GF4 MX440 VIVO is the minimum

2002-11-19 22:03:00 | Alright, So just a budget 5.1 soundcard is on the list, I take it that it will come with some cabling for me? Or am I gonna have to make a trip down to DSE sometime soon. | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2002-11-19 22:05:00 | >I take it that it will come with some cabling for me? What kinda cabling r u looking for in a sound card ? U mean the audio cable for the CD ROM ?

2002-11-19 22:07:00 | I have a spare one of those. Cabling to go from the soundcard to my home theatre system. On the back of my stereo is 6 channel stereo for DVD, but it uses RCA connectors. It wont be coming with that will it?! | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
