2002-11-20 07:58:00 | Hi, I've got a server which I want to run as a part of my LAN. For the obvious reason that it's a server, I don't want to have to have a monitor, kyb and mouse connected to it 24/7. To get around it's wailings I have enabled monitorless and keyboardless operation in BIOS. However, this still leaves me with the sticky problem of having to hit OK at windows logon before it will run its apps. There's something in the Network settings to get rid of this, and I did it by accident a while ago, but seem to have screwed it up since. What is the something? Also, Win98SE is not exactly the ultimate server OS either. As it has to run ASP pages, Linux is difficult, unless I want to use Chillisoft, but that's expensive and difficult. It's running PWS at the moment, which is crappy and incapable of a lot of cool things (CDONTS anyone?)... So, can I run IIS from an ordinary install of Win2k Pro, or do I need to get a server one? (let's say that's out of the question!) Is there anything to run ASP on linux that's free? - I though that was the whole idea... Cheers, Erin

2002-11-20 09:12:00 | Wuppo, When I first decided to learn about web programming, this was my first port of call for advice on a language. ASP seemed to come out tops, so I learnt that. I now have a complete setup, with a multimegabyte Access Database all running smoothly. I sort of wish I'd gone with PHP, simply because it's linux (or more importantly, not M$), but it's a bit late now. I might learn it sometime, but it strikes me that once fully mastered, the two languages give you almost exactly the same flexibility and power. For example, trademe.co.nz is built around ASP, while ebazaar.co.nz (a blatant rip-off of trademe, with some cut & paste text from it), uses PHP. They are almost exactly identical. Have you guys seen ebazaar yet? The more you look at it, the more you realise how much of a copy of trademe it is. I even found a warning saying "you can no longer ask to have your bids removed" - word for word from trademe, and what does "no longer" mean? The site has only been in operation for a few weeks! One could also desire more accurate grammar :) Having given it a thorough bashing, it does have a few rather classy features (which trademe will no doubt adopt in the near future), such as the ability to automatically relist an auction if it doesn't sell. ANYWAY! We were talking about a server OS... Can you use IIS on an ordinary install of Win2k Pro? Cheers, Erin

2002-11-20 09:23:00 | Erin, linux is free, ASP is not. You can run IIS on win2k pro, just there will be a maximum of 10 connections that can be made at a time.

2002-11-20 10:59:00 | Hi, A 10 connection limit has to suck... :( What about running Chillisoft? Maybe I should indeed learn PHP, how hard is it? Nah, that's crazy, I only need to host a simple website. Trouble is, it's reasonably likely to get more than 10 connections. What's the Limit with PWS? I'm aware Linux is free :) How long would it take to learn PHP/MySQL to a degree where one could make a website with email sending facilities, and a database that is read from and written to? I suppose there is a lot of crossover between ASP and PHP... I mean, most of the site (on most pages), is more than half HTML, and that's used in both. I do have a bit of spare time these holidays... :S Erin

2002-11-20 11:25:00 | Yeah I'm planning on learning php/mysql these holidays, amongst other things. Well you could run Chillisoft but it does cost, unless you're like a school with MS agreement and the like. Our college has got ApacheASP they tried to get it to work on the server (RH7.3) and they ended up screwing it up big time, took out php with it. They ended up giving up and we just learn ASP by using IIS on the computers we were sitting at. Also how many hosting services offer ASP on a linux platform? Not sure if it's possible, but you may find that it's possible to utilise the ASP dll (comes with IIS, PWS(i think)) with apache. I might have to look into that at some stage. There may also be a way to allow IIS in pro to allow more connections than 10.
