100097 2002-11-21 07:12:00 Freaky things can happen. Twice in the past Ive had those sort of theoretically impossible actual download speeds when downloading zipped binary program files from Simtel, not as fast as 26kilobytes/sec, but around 17 - 20KB/sec. No way could those files have been compressed much more, no explanation for it. Terry Porritt (14)
100098 2002-11-21 08:46:00 I agree with you Terry it has happenrd to me a couple of times( about three years ago) 14KB/sec over a quarter hour period. Rod ger (316)
100099 2002-11-22 03:34:00 How would it be if you started a transfer just before midnight and ended just after, giving a negative time (with "simple" time calculation --- on the basis of "it won't happen", or "never thought of that"). The time diff would be truncated, and give a "sensible" impossible value. The same sort of thing can happen if the byte counters in the TCP/IP software wrap around. A lot of "programming" is done by people who have no knowledge of numerical methods. There are a lot of bad numbers generated by their programmes. "It comes out of the computer: it must be right".

The one thing you can be sure of is: If your modem is made to the V90 standard, and it's talking to a V90 compliant unit at the ISP, it has an absolute maximum download rate of 56000 bps. V90 is an international standard. That specifies the maximum (down) transfer rate.

There is no free lunch.

100100 2002-11-22 04:52:00 I agree, and that may well be so, but it was about 4 years ago, IBM the ISP, and a x2 USR 56k modem, downloading files from Simtel about 1MB size or so, , the download times were also clocked against my watch, and they came down wiz-bang 15-20 kB/s.
It happened several times over maybe a month or so at random. Sometimes the programs were corrupted, other times they were ok.
Belongs in the "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" category.
