| 100079 | 2002-11-20 23:58:00 | Just wondering if anybody knows why cookies are called cookies? ?:| | CYaBro (73) | ||
| 100080 | 2002-11-21 00:12:00 | From Webopedia (www.webopedia.com): "The name cookie derives from UNIX objects called magic cookies. These are tokens that are attached to a user or program and change depending on the areas entered by the user or program. " |

I did just find this (members.aol.com) though: "Last week I stated that cookies (those small files that browsers create and place on your computer to keep track of your preferences and personal information) were called cookies "for no compelling reason." Well, some investigative readers sent in some reasons why cookies may be called cookies: HelenVance: A cookie is a carpentry term for a small brace that is used between two boards to strengthen the bond between the boards. JJFletch: Cookies are called cookies because people leave crumbs about themselves when they visit Web sites." |

But you could ask that about a lot of things, why am I browsing using Phoenix.. Why did they call it that? Is it a dinosaur of a browser? I think not! Perhaps there's no real answer to that question, although it is very intriguing! |

| 100084 | 2002-11-21 00:41:00 | From my ColdFusion book that I was reading this morning: "Cookies are one of the most misunderstood technologies on the Web (and the fact that they have a funny name does not help one bit). Unfortunately, lots of unfounded hype and conspiracy theories have tarnished the reputation of these invaluable tools. Cookies are simply variables that are stored on your computer by your browser." |

| 100085 | 2002-11-21 01:19:00 | I always thought that cookies were named after fortune cookies. A worthless something given at the end of a meal or when leaving a Chinese restaurant in the States. The idea was that you'd remember the restaurant and come back. | crozier (2004) | ||
