99830 2002-11-20 06:44:00 I have a home network setup with 3 computers, all plugged into a 5-way switch, and to the internet via a dsl modem, also through the switch.

All computers can access the internet, but none of the computers can see each other, and sometimes, when for some random reason they actually see each other, they lock up when you try to access each other.

What on earth is going on? Internet connection firewall is turned off on them all, and we're running zone alarm instead. But even with zone alarm off, there is still probelms.

Can anyone think of anything obvious I have missed, to try and sort things out - or how to try and work out what's at fault?

99831 2002-11-20 06:59:00 Occasionally my gateway PC for ICS (Dial up on a Win2K Pro PC) will freeze when transferring data... sometimes its fine and will transfer hundreds of megs, other days, a small MP3 will kill it.
To see each other, make sure they're all part of the same WorkGroup.
Also, Open up My Computer and in the Address bar, type:
\\OtherPCNAME\C$\
That'll be the other PC's C: drive!

Hope this helps

99833 2002-11-20 08:00:00 If all your PC's can see the net they must be on the same IP network, i.e. 192.168.1.x. At least if they all have the same subnet mask, which should be 255.255.255.0. I am a best disorganised at present ! Did XP do everything or have you set things up manually. I found that XP could quite easily cock it all up just as easily get it right. My ADSL is 192.168.1.1 which is universal. The subnet should be 255.255.255.0. All other PC's must have the same three octets as their first group of IP numbers, i.e. 192.168.1.x. The last octet (8 bits of the address) can be in the range 2 to 254. You can check this in My Network Places. You're right about Zone Alarm. Very good prog. but can really cause prblems if not configured to allow access. Have you enabled sharing on each machine. No sharing enabled - no computer visible. As one last thought have you offered sufficient sacrifices to the god M$ recently ??

99834 2002-11-21 03:27:00 Xp is fussy about having user accounts on each machine. If there's not an account for you on the machine you want to access, it won't do it. Graham L (2)
