100270 2002-11-21 08:38:00 ok i'm looking for an antivirus program to use & to install on other peoples machines. i personally use nortons now, but have been told it's not all it's cracked up to be. suggestions & debate please ;)

NORTON:
pros: good updates, never hear of it missing virii
cons: it's one huge mother, hog resources a bit, i've heard uninstalling it can cause problems. COST

AVG:
pros: FREE.
cons: a bit ugly

ANTIVIR PE from www.free-av.com
pros: free, some people I trust have said it's real good. They did tests of a few different ones and like this.
cons: i haven't used it yet.

please add anything you can to this for me, ta :D

PS did you guys miss me? I was busy with exam's 'n' stuff.

100273 2002-11-21 08:56:00 Go for Norton Antivirus.

Its the best i have used so far. If you got a reasonable system it wont give the effect of hogging your system. I run it on my poor Celeron 333 and it doesnt show the hoggin effect that much. As for catching the virus, it has got all of them without me worrying even the bugbear and others.

And if its for personal use then dont worry about costs as you can download a trial version from Symantec's site and run just a little code available from the web to make it run perpetually! :D :D

Cheers

100274 2002-11-21 09:04:00 Pluto it is not very wise advocating software piracy on a site like this.
Personally I have never really liked Nortons AV. Since I downloaded AVG I have been very happy with it and am certainly not worried about it being slightly ugly.

100275 2002-11-21 09:08:00 I use AVG and don't care what it looks like also, as long as it does its job as it has so far. shaawing (1863)
100276 2002-11-21 09:18:00 I spose i should add that i have been running NAV on the 98SE doze box for about 5 years now.. so one slip is exceptable, i would see atleast one virus most weeks

100277 2002-11-21 09:43:00 AVG - as good as any, as up to date as any, uses less resources than many, AND ITS FREE. Why anyone would consider paying when they can get the same (or better in some cases) protection free is totally beyond me. |llus|oN (645)
100278 2002-11-21 10:00:00 Hi..

Mainly use free AVG - Simple & effective but not very customizable. Also use free Avast32 which is a lot more involved to customize but works good (Though it has asimple interface for beginners). It has many suboptions within the advanced interface - though english translation may be tricky to comprehend at first...
Started with free Anitivir which is fast, but again not very customizable, and updates (called patterns) take a while to download ('bout 1/2 hour or so). Type "Antivirus review" in your search engine and you should come across a comprehensive comparative review of the main antivirus programs which I have read and I think it gave Avast32 a good review...
