2002-11-22 01:42:00 | Just been reading the APC mag, and Page 20's article looks scary. Apparently the recording companies are trying to get the right to "Damage your computer equipment by a legally sanctioned attack from the entertainment industry". Just wanting to know what your thoughts on this are, and how far is "too far" when recording companies try to protect copyrighted materials. Some CD's made by Sony have even been known not to play in some computers and even Crash some systems!?

2002-11-22 01:55:00 | Interesting thought. Consider how you would feel if someone broke into your shop every night and stole some stock, and the police were powerless to act. Would you feel like boobytrapping your stock? I sure would. If they needed a car to take it away, and I found a method of disbling the car remotely, would I use it? Yes. Draw your own parallels?

2002-11-22 02:02:00 | But what about the customers that come in the next day and pick up an item of your stock, only to have their hand bitten on by a mouse trap that you'd laid the night before? There's two sides to every story...

2002-11-22 02:45:00 | :P :D But more OT (On the Off-Topic), how far could this sort of thing go. They mis-took a kids book-report on harry potter for breaching copyright...?!

2002-11-22 02:49:00 | Let me be more specific . When you buy my stock, I disable the electronic sticker . If you steal my stock (for which you need a car) then your car will not start, as the sticker has not been disabled . Not suggesting damaging your car . No mousetraps . No electric fences . No pieces of wood with sharp nails . Would I do it (if it were possible, and people were stealing?) Yes Would you Chilling? (and if not why not) Remember one cannot cause physical harm or damage to property . But these people are (one believes) taking the equivalent of money from you . <flame suit ON> ]:)

2002-11-22 02:51:00 | how exactly are they doing this? is it like they host a fake "warez" page full of their products that are actually viruses? or what? and how can running an audio cd damage your computer? ur right...it cant. unless its a PC AUDIO one, then the AUTORUN cood execute a mad as BAT FILE that reformats ur comp on the next restart... omg omg thats a good idea! copy a blank cd with what i just said, and call it "FULL: COUNTER STRIKE/ WAREZ" and leave it in a classroom at school. some guy will take it home and BHAHAHAHAHAHAHA im evil?

2002-11-22 02:52:00 | Sony had a silly method of stopping their CDs playing on a PC CD drive. A bit unfair, but as long as they clearly display a warning that they won't play on my PC it's OK with me. But of course it only took a day or two for some kid with a black marker to find a 'fix' for this. But to threaten to "Damage your computer equipment by a legally sanctioned attack from the entertainment industry" is ridiculous. I doubt id they will be able to do this world wide as each country has different set of laws so they would more than likely break some laws in some countries. Also I don't think it would take long before there is software avaialable to counteract their attacks. It would be interesting to know what for these supposed attacks would take. Surely it would have to be some form of virus which is already illegal in most countries. While I can see the USA backing these companies (after all, it's basically run by big business) I really can't see it happening globally.
