100998 2002-11-24 08:42:00 Am trying to install a Crystal CS4236 soundcard on a friends old 486 Compaq Deskpro running running Win95b .

System saw the card and I got the usual dialogue box asking for location of drivers . However, windows wouldn’t read from the CD drive and froze .

Ok! no problem, I thought . Copied the drivers to a folder on C drive and rebooted - will get device manager to update .

Yes, device manager recognizes the path specified does contain the needed drivers but click on finish and nothing happens . :( Tried several times all with the same result, just can’t get device manager to do anything with the drivers .

I know the drivers are correct as I've used them with this card on several other Win95 machines .

Am stumped ?:| ?:| Any suggestions about what to try next?

BTW - Turfing the old dunger isn’t an option! It might be old and slow but does all they need and is better than no computer at all . :D

Cheers

100999 2002-11-24 11:22:00 Fiddler,
since Windows could not read it from the CD, and alhtough you have copied it to the hdd, there still could be a possibility that the file/driver is corrupt!

Have you tried downloadng an updated/new copy of the drivers?

driverguide.com is a good place to start

Cheers

Yes, it had occurred to me that the driver could be corrupt; the one I copied to the hard-drive was from another source.

I also tried removing the card in device manager and rebooted but same problem - Windows would acknowledge there was a valid driver in the directory but just won’t go any further. I also tried physically removing the card and starting the whole procedure from scratch – still same thing.

Could it be a problem with the operating system (something corrupted??) If so would a reinstall over the top of the present system fix things ??

101002 2002-11-25 04:10:00 A reinstall shouldn't make it worse. ;-) How did you copy the files ("copy /b" because they are binary) ? Did they come from a CD and have the read-only attribute set? ... I don't know, but feel that it shouldn't matter :D. Graham L (2)
