100990 2002-11-24 08:34:00 Dug this up from my "beach house" (which in reality is my crappy-old-PC-hardware-that-I-haven't-got-the-heart-to-throw-away dumping ground) today: It's a 1994 PC General pamphlet...what a laugh!
"be in the first 100 to purchase a system and get a free upgrade from a 170mb drive to a 210mb!" Praise the lord!
A "high speed" internal 14.4 modem for a mere $399 (I've got one for for $200 if anyone wants it).
17" monitors" A small price to pay - $1499.
16 bit stereo (!) sound card, $169.
And this bit make me laugh because I bought one: Game master multimedia kit - double speed CD rom (still got it), 16 bit stereo sound card and 14 titles on CD - $499 (+GST by the way).

Some things haven't gone down that much in price: a cordless infra red mouse at $125 was good value in '94, surely...also a box of 10 3.5 floppies at $9 is about the norm...not that any sane person would want to use one.
Maybe I can sell the pamphlet on trademe as a collectible. Any bids? :)

100991 2002-11-24 22:26:00 U shooda scanned it and shown us, its not as fun reading it as txt.

I saw a 1997 PC WORLD mag the other day, good fun looking at laptops: they r so ugly too. And its like "OMG OMG 1 GIG HARDRIVE ITS SOOO BIG!"

Yeah

100992 2002-11-24 22:36:00 I remember my first 286 running ToyBox 2 (Search my other posts for download - less than 2 megs). I had a 20 MEGABYTE Hdd and when we upgraded to a 486, there was no 5 1/4" floppy, but rather a CD-ROM drive, it had a whopping 245MB HDD! We doublespaced both drives!
Nowadays, 6 Gig is barely enough to get by with!

100993 2002-11-24 22:44:00 You'd be better off with an Amiga 1200 - far better value! crozier (2004)
100994 2002-11-24 23:19:00 Shortly I'm getting a delivery of a hundred or so pre 1990 computer mags, so I can scan up the good ads and get them online :D But in the meantime, for a good laugh, check out vintagecomputerads.com (http://www.vintagecomputerads.com) B-) B-) B-) honeylaser (814)
100995 2002-11-25 05:44:00 I've still got the Dec 1989 PC World. First Compaq Server box with twin 386/33 processors for $48,000. First notebook at about $12,000.
I wrote my articles on a Mac back then :8}

100996 2002-11-25 08:05:00 Maybe robo should still be doing stuff on mac. osx is really very good, and the machines are fast and user friendly.
On archival junk, I have a Maxtor 80mb drive bought 1992 which still runs perfectly - no bad sectors, just a bit small.
Plenty of discs. word6.0 remeber that, excel 3 remember that (lucky that one didn't last for long, windows 3.0 remember that, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 - now that was useful for getting rid indirectly of my useless windowsxp that i have reinstalled but never use. Funny how outdated stuff can surprise. Have old dos discs, I think about 3.0 is the earliest, plus some pre-mac apple stuff.
One day I'll have a big throwout, i don't want to be a computer archivist.
