1322305 2013-01-10 19:04:00 Hi There,

I have a galaxy S3 which was updated recently to the Official Jelly Bean OS, there has been a number of performance issues since the software update, the battery doesn’t last as before the upgrade, the phone gets warm when used, which didn’t used to happen before, and the phone keeps on crashing and freezing, this is not to mention that it reboots once a day .

The mobile carrier is 2 degrees, the software version is 4 . 1 . 1, and the phone was purchased from Harvey Norman .

Are there any suggestions in regards to resolving the above issues? What would be the best way of reverting back to the previous software version?

Any help would be much appreciated .

Regards,

Louis

1322307 2013-01-11 00:55:00 Make sure everything is backed up/synched, restoring to factory won't delete things on the SD card (but if you have irreplaceable things on it I'd back them up to be safe) It will however reset some things in applications. Usually it's not a problem but in my (very lame) experience some game stats were lost, so if you use an app that has some form of info stored in it, try back that up too (if you want to keep it)

Business end:

Settings --> Backup and Reset --> Factory Reset

Done.

Of course, in my opinion the stock ROM (ROM provided by samsung) is terrible. Simply because it's performance is far below the capabilities of the device. Also the UI is laggy and ugly (all personal opinion I might add)

Anyway, it's not for everyone since the process can appear a bit daunting (Its not, instructions are very easy to follow) but you can always replace the stock ROM with a custom one. The one that I recommend is what's known as a vanilla ROM, which means it's as close to "pure" android as possible (No modificatons/alterations like the samsung one) It's a very good performer and looks very nice. Although since it looks a little different it can throw some people off but the underlying functionality is still the same.

Take a look at the page here - forum.xda-developers.com

If the factory reset doesn't fix it and you think SuperNexus looks right for you I'd be more than happy to assist you through the process.

1322308 2013-01-11 01:28:00 I agree, just factory wipe it.
Backup SMS using play.google.com
Backup photos / videos using G+ instant upload
Music should be backed up to Google Play Music
Contact / Calendar / Mail etc should all be backed up using your Google account

So just wipe it and you ought to be good :)

1322309 2013-01-11 02:40:00 I got a parallel imported S3 with 4.1.1 on it shortly after not joining in on the Nexus 4 purchasing (just a bit of random timing and circumstances) and I find it excellent, not laggy or ugly at all. Mine is very stable and silky smooth. I'm very happy with it.
I did get the software update immediately on setting this up though, and factory reset it afterwards. I understand the desire to use custom ROMs but honestly when you spend $700 upwards on a new phone and it's all running sweetly like mine I really have no desire to mess with it. As a plus mine's a french model and gets firmware updates sooner than the NZ ones do.

My previous experiments with custom ROMs on the galaxy S were fairly positive but ultimately I went back to the stock Vodafone ROM because it just worked more consistently.

1322310 2013-01-11 06:42:00 Just my experiences. Its funny you should say yours is smooth. I hear lots of people say their device is really good but all the ones I have run into are just a bit "sticky" when it comes to scrolling. Perhaps the international ROM's are better than telecom's ones. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest! The UI comes down to a matter of taste, I know many that like it, Samsung brought a lot of cool features to their ROM (phone to ear to call, swipe to call/text from contacts etc).

Custom ROM's are great IF you can find a stable and well supported one. I was nearly ready to throw in the towel on my S2 at one point until I found SuperNexus. Until you get a supported and stable ROM its just not fun dealing with bits of broken OS. As you said, a broken ROM is far worse than a stock ROM.

1322311 2013-01-11 08:07:00 I'm happy enough with mine. Although it does occasionally reboot for no apparant reason. As far as battery life goes. Mine was diabolical after the jellybean update. Installed Juice Defender, left all the settings on default & it's better now than it was on ICS Phil B (648)
1322312 2013-01-11 08:49:00 I have found that mine is slightly less responsive under Jellybean than it was under ICS. It isn't bad enough for me to expend any effort looking for a fix Greven (91)
1322313 2013-01-11 20:52:00 Never had an issue with mine. Never rebooted and purrs along very nicely! Webbnzl (8810)
1322314 2013-01-11 23:01:00 My S3 works perfectly too to Jelly bean
But I do admit I have rooted the mobile and performance is better than what it was.
