1321770 2013-01-07 01:52:00 we are using a netgear N150 DGN 1000 modem but we cant get wifi in our far bedroom which our son uses.
If we upgraded to a netcom NB6 PLUS 4wn would that give us a better range

would upgrading to this modem increase our internet speed over the N150
our current speed is ping 35 to 55 2.16 to 3.19 mbs down and .65 to .69 up (slow I know )
we are with Orcon 10 min out of town and about 200 metres from telecom box on road

Many thanks
Peter

1321771 2013-01-07 02:02:00 If you get another modem, I would get a wireless N 300 modem/router. Not wireless N 150.

But, if you do, you would also have to replace the adapters at the other end. To make it worthwhile. So, they're wireless N 300. Not wireless G, or N 150 adapters. Does the modem have the latest firmware on it?

Also is your wireless secure? Not on WEP / open?

1321772 2013-01-07 02:09:00 Yea as Speedy said, you need N devices at both ends, the router and the wireless device, to get the benefit of the extended range of Wireless N.
Have you tried changing the wireless channel to see if that makes any difference?

Also, if what you say is true and, you are only about 200 metres from the Telecom cabinet then your internet connection is pretty bad.
Are you using in line filters on your phones/fax/sky etc or do you have a master ADSL splitter installed?

1321773 2013-01-07 02:27:00 oka this probably gets more technical than I am

we were not able to get bradband untill late november we were told that there were no free ports we complained to all sorts of people and suddenly the 6 familys waiting in our subdivision were able to conect so not sure how chorus found the extra ports as we are still using the older existing box which was maxed out this is a new subdivision 3 yrs old which chorus set up to handle 100 phone lines but only 25 broadband ports Just amazing

we have the filters on both phone jacks in the house its a new house under 1 yr old

The wireless is secured by a password
what make of modem router is a good one I guess i wanted one that was easy to configure and as fast a possible and had a better range than the existing one

What channel would you recomend trying? will we have to change any settings on the computers, phones or ipads

1321774 2013-01-07 02:49:00 This is what I'm using. (support.asus.com) It works fine. The 2 pcs here are in a bedroom, the modem is in the lounge. Not that far away, but there's a wall in between

And these are the adapters, I use (www.belkin.com 4). These were 69 at DSE a while ago. Looks like they're 79.95 now. But you don't have to get Belkin adapters. You can get PCI cards if you want.

Both of these are plugged into a port on the back of the case. So far so good. I can still download at the speeds I used to get when these were connected with ethernet cable

1321775 2013-01-07 02:59:00 I'll second that notion, you won't be able to find many NB6Plus4Wn devices left for sale. Get the N12U instead. It's not guaranteed but I'd personally take my chances with it over the Netgear. The N12U is easy to setup and configure, solid range, and the 300mbps N-wireless is more likely to give you the better reach vs the 150mbps N-wireless.

Can you login to your router and post the "status" page details? I'm keen to see what it says about your Attenuation / SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) / Sync speeds vs what you're actually attaining. This will point us in the direction of the issue being your ISP / Cabinet oversubscribed vs your actual line being an issue (Or the other way around).

Also, changing channel, you shouldn't have to adjust anything on your PCs / iPads / Phones etc.
On top of that, when you get your new router, make sure you setup the WiFi access point in an *identical* manner, using the same capitalization in your network SSID (Network name) and the same password / encryption methods etc. It might take an extra minute or two to jot down the details from your current router but saves you having to muck around on all your devices later on.

1321776 2013-01-07 03:10:00 Thanks seems a simple solution and I like the idea of being able to conect a printer up to them for wireless as well
will see if dick smith has them or do you know who else sells them please

If anyone else is reading this thread and has a comment on these I would be keen to know

many thanks
Peter

1321778 2013-01-07 03:20:00 The only thing with the ASUS modem/router I posted is NOT all printers will work when you plug them into the USB port. It has to be a supported printer. ie: one of these (event.asus.com)

I was going to see if the printer I brought would work with the USB port, but its already wireless. So, I didn't bother. It probably would since I think its identical to the MX416. Which is the same printer but for another country

1321779 2013-01-07 04:03:00 PBTech.co.nz do them at a good price, and they deliver nationwide too.

Post the details of your status page though and we can help with your connection itself as well as a separate issue from the WiFi range :)
