1321743 2013-01-06 22:03:00 I have been told that new chipsets will soon be making everything current obsolete.
How much should this affect my plans for a new computer?

1321744 2013-01-06 23:20:00 There will always be new technology on the horizon to make current stuff obsolete. inphinity (7274)
1321745 2013-01-06 23:37:00 Yeah in a nutshell, it won't. Whoever told you that isn't 100% sure about what they're talking about, and at best is scaremongering.

As inphinity mentioned, there are always upgrades, there's a good chance there's been half a dozen solid progressions since your current PC at least, but your PC itself still works fine, doesn't it? ;)

1321746 2013-01-07 00:01:00 PCs will become obsolete.
Already phones. tablets are the thing, eventually we'll have our "device".
So what? Meanwhile use what you like.

1321751 2013-01-07 05:21:00 It's rubbish a smartphone or tablet is a PC in a different form, they don't become obsolete they just evolve.
It's an ever changing technology and there will always be something new coming as others have said, if you want a PC now buy one now and don't worry about what's coming next month - that'll be superseded soon enough also.

And no matter how small and powerful devices get it'll be a long time before the keyboard/mouse/large screen combination dissappear from my house and many others. It's just better.
I see a day coming when portable devices are powerful enough to do everything and can use a docking station at home to give you the full PC experience, but despite a few very cool devices along exactly that line we just aren't there yet and won't be for a while.
