| 1297729 | 2012-08-29 05:01:00 | It has been clinically proven that a child who is nursed by his mother tends to have better teeth, stronger bones and is 22 . 5 IQ points higher than those who aren't breast fed . OK - I made that up, but it was working for me until my mom finally weened me at (my) 13th birthday . But we all read and know about the bene's of human milk for human babies, and I in particular like the nice containers --- but this is not gonna work on several levels ::: This Spring brought news of goats engineered to lactate the building blocks of a malaria vaccine . Now Co . Exist reports on transgenic goats that produce milk with breast milk enzymes and proteins . Which begs the question: Whats more odd, milking goats for drugs, or milking goats for human milk? And which work-around has a better chance of widespread adoption? UC Davis scientists created the transgenic goats by transferring human genes for breast milk enzymes and proteins into goat embryos . Co . Exists Peter Smith reports: The transgenic dairy goats can make milk with up to about 60% of the lysozyme and lactoferrin found in mothers milk, which means a longer shelf life (these chemicals kill pathogenic bacteria) and also a faster cheese-ripening process (they kill off the milks beneficial bacteria sooner) . Human breast milk gives human babies unique immunological defenses that they cant get from other animals milk . For babies of mothers who arent present, or cant nurse them, milk from these transgenic goats could provide the next-best alternative . The UC Davis team has been studying the engineered goats milk for a number of years now to perfect the formula (no pun intended) . So far theyve only tested it on the toddler equivalent in pigs (don't EVEN ask about this!) , whove shown increased resistance to illness after drinking the milk . No word yet on when it will enter clinical testing in humans . |
