The iPhone for example only has one phone that it sells not numerous, that's its strategic thing. If you were generally seen as a "leader" in the industry would you devalue your products?
You could argue with control and that stuff which I am not in tune with, but as a more of a general user, many/most out there it may not matter for the non-technie type. By doing that the company could maintain more control and QA. But of course there are arguments to that.
