OK - now what's wrong with this story?

NEW YORK (AP) — A laid-off clothing designer fatally shot an executive at his former company outside the Empire State Building on Friday, setting off a chaotic showdown with police in front of one of the world's best-known landmarks . Officers killed the gunman and at least nine others were wounded, some by stray police gunfire, authorities said .

The gunshots rang out on the Fifth Avenue side of the building at around 9 a . m . , when pedestrians on their way to work packed sidewalks and merchants were opening their shops .

"People were yelling 'Get down! Get down!'" said Marc Engel, an accountant who was on a bus in the area when he heard the shots . "It took about 15 seconds, a lot of pop, pop, pop, pop, one shot after the other . "

Afterward, he saw the sidewalks littered with the wounded, including one person "dripping enough blood to leave a stream . "

Beside the fact that the NY cops shot some passers-by, the carnage was pretty bad even on a bad day .

Here's the capper: The anti-gun laws in New York are the toughest and strictest in the whole US - nay, the world . Possession is a crime in and of itself .

WIKI: Many believe the act was to discriminate against immigrants in New York, particularly Italians, as the first person arrested under the law was mobster Giuseppe Costabile . Whether this was part of the law's intent, it was passed on a wave of anti-immigrant rhetoric as a measure to disarm an alleged criminal element . The police granted the licenses, and could easily discriminate against "undesirable" elements .

In case youse guys don't want to click on the link:::

Johnson legally bought the gun in Sarasota, Fla . , in 1991, but he didn't have a required permit to possess the weapon in New York City, police said .

"New York City, as you know, is the safest big city in the country, and we are on pace to have a record low number of murders this year," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said . "But we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence," he said about the shooting, which comes in the wake of mass shootings inside a Colorado movie theater and a Sikh temple in Wisconsin .

The Sullivan Act is here for youse guys to peruse::: "For handguns, the Sullivan Act qualifies as a may issue act, meaning the local police have discretion to issue a concealed carry license, as opposed to a shall issue act, in which state authorities must give a concealed handgun license to any person who satisfies specific criteria, often a background check and a safety class . 1296737 2012-08-24 23:54:00 SIDEBAR: Someone posted this response, and I think it hits pretty close to home.

"ibid: ---- another criminal act of violence, and the gun control debate will roar on, the probing of the gunman's mental state etc. However again the media and our "progressive" society will miss the big picture by focusing on the symptoms rather than the disease. Our economy is in the dumps, we are a deeply divided angry nation with little hope left. Factor in our over glorification of violence and this is the result."

1296738 2012-08-25 00:22:00 Joe you had better watch out for the filth trying to water down your gun rights which are among the best in the world. Iraq, Yemen and a few other countries allow you to carry automatics. prefect (6291)
1296739 2012-08-25 00:39:00 I don't own any firearms, and that's the way I like it. But firearms don't present a threat to people -PEOPLE are the problem. It's not going to work - trying to legislate morality and a conscience but certain 'it-takes-a-villiage' mentalities think so.

The laws as they exist are good enough if they'd only enforce what they have on the books instead of wringing their collective hands and creating more laws ---- that cannot be enforced either.

Automatics, no wonder those countries are crazy.
Hey Joe, why don't you want a fire arm? It could come in handy.

1296741 2012-08-25 08:09:00 If everyone carries autos it evens everything out. Its only a problem when some people have inferior firepower.
The Yanks when they invaded Iraq made a rule only 30 round mag per house. A bit harsh hopefully, that stink law has been ditched.

"If everyone carries autos it evens everything out . " - what exactly gets evened out? The number of gunshot victims?

If everyone carries automatics . . . . more people can be killed much more effectively/efficiently . . .

No-one wins an arms race . :groan:

1296744 2012-08-25 12:30:00 I worry not about the gunman (thats an separate issue) but why multiple officers discharged their firearms at one person with limited accuracy. With 9 people wounded it is beyond a mirical that someone was not killed other than the gunman The Error Guy (14052)

That's the knee jerk reaction: AUTOMATICS . He was not carrying an automatic weapon that pops off 200 rounds a minute . It was a semi-automatic 45 Cal handgun with a nine round clip - not even an AK or M1 and surely not a BAR or a Thompson .

1) Bringing an unlicensed weapon into New York State is a Class 1 felony - he broke that law .
2) Laws are for people who obey them .
3) Criminals and people otherwise motivated will not obey any law .
4) Re-read #1-3 .

The liberal press has a field day with the very reactionary word: 'automatic weapon' - when full autos aren't allowed for anyone but federally licensed collectors - and many of these are welded actions and rendered non-workable and are just museum pieces .

Realize this: he shot his ex boss over being fired . This is an unemployment issue - not a hate crime --- nor a racist crime --- nor a terrorist attack .

Now onto the story as it was officially released to the (complacent/ignorant) masses: (since) the average person has no idea that an automatic weapon is rare in civilian hands, the press and by extension 'they' - the readers - just incorrectly categorize all weapons as automatic - even a flintlock . This red herring journalism is just smoke and mirrors to hide the real problem(s) and since the media is owned and sleeps with the powers that be --- well, add your own segue here .

My (almost) final take on this: Things are going to get bloodier and nastier as people eventually come to the realization that things (legally . morally, intelligently) are changed now and are getting worse, society-wise . Food shortages, riots, social distinctions becoming more acutely observable (ultra rich v trench dwellers) and people with no hope for a meal tomorrow or who are watching their kids starve are not going to be rational nor move in legal circles .

No jobs nor chances of ever again finding one that can pay for the necessities has become the norm . Vast hordes of people who are no longer reported on the 'unemployed' lists are becoming desperate and will take whatever initiative they deem necessary, to survive .

The 'chronically unemployed' are such a huge number, that if THEY every join up in a singly motivated mass they will be pretty much unstoppable . Most of these people have heard and heeded the call to arm themselves as heavily as possible and horde food, water, ammunition and head for the hills awaiting 'the word' to re-takeover the gummermint .

Add to the realization that the US is living under martial law disguised as The Homeland Security Act and that the constitution has been in abeyance since 9/11 . When this truth becomes obvious, there will be a huge reaction by people who have been fooled into keeping the status quo and duped into believing that the next guy in office will straighten things out----- hah .

There are highly motivate, highly trained para-military/retired military in well armed militias hiding out all over the place in the US - awaiting the results of this next election .

Whichever party assumes electoral majority and whomever becomes president this November, it may well be the signal knell to start the retake of leadership in total disgust over either the winner or the loser much like The US Revolutionary War .

Once those with axes to grind jell into one angry collective mob, there will be heads a-rolling . You will then see a lot of full automatic weapons show up that are NOT museum pieces .

Have a nice day
