1321457 2013-01-10 21:47:00 Quite different.

Very few people liked Win ME, lots people liked XP (they are quite different); few people liked Vista and lots people like Win 7. Why? Simply, Win ME is junk, XP is good; Vista is terrible, Win 7 is excellent!

1321458 2013-01-10 22:32:00 Many years ago I had Windows 2000 Professional, it was fast, reasonably stable and did the job (unlike Malfunction Edition!!).
When XP first came out it was called a resource hog and a
joke by many. It wasn't until SP2 that it was seen as 'good' by most.
A lot of us resist change, especially if it is difficult to justify
from the users standpoint.
Change is in this case driven by desire to profit, not by need.
(Welcome to the consumer society I guess.)

Hard to see a reason to move to 8 at the moment.
(I've only just got fully settled with 7 :p )

1321459 2013-01-12 03:55:00 Know why ??

I'll tell ya, its the way W8 builds the disk storage, its different to previous versions. But of course every one knows you can add drives and do multi operations. It can also work like the WHS drive extender -- google it. BTW- W7 cant do it ;)

Pardon me for unable to figure out how they are related to the problem that I experienced. Could you please elaborate a little further?

Thanks

The remark, reply was meant as a facetious reply.

In an earlier post #24,it was mentioned that secondary drives were not being detected.

The problem these days is a lot of people just expect things to work right out the box, and when they dont its automatically assumed the Operating system is rubbish.

What ever happened to if something dont work - find out why ?

Being a Tech, these sorts of things are common,Something on a PC doesn't work - find out why - sometimes its easy and obvious, other times its roll up the sleeves, put on the thinking cap and figure it out.

When I had that happen the first time ( second drive didn't detect) I went looking for answers, and found plenty. There can be several reasons why when attaching a second or more Drives they dont detect in W8 straight away.

Windows 8 has a few features and different ways of doing things that previous editions didn't, and thats why sometimes the drives dont always detect.

Assuming the drive is seen in the BIOS then it can be made to be seen normally.
I wont go into all the technical details, any one can look them up if they wise. But some of the causes can (in basic form) be the following.

1. Some setting in the BIOS
2. The way the second drive was previously operated (was it an original boot drive)
3. Has it even been formatted
4. Has the drive initialised
5.Has the drive been given a drive Letter automatically ( this is a common cause, if no drive letter, then it wont be seen) - you go into the device manager and look to see, if no drive letter give it one.
6. Windows 8 has whats called drive pooling / Storage Spaces (Similar to WHS) NEW feature that most people dont know anything about, or it even exists Heres a link to a bit more about it ( the basics) windows-8s-storage-spaces-detailed (www.anandtech.com) Theres also a link at the bottom of the article going to more detailed usage, how to do it etc.

I had a drive setup under storage spaces, once I took it out of the pool, it didn't show anymore till I re gave it a drive letter.

Theres a few more reasons, but above the most common causes, or any combination of causes.
If any of the above or any combination of them exist, there may be a problem.

What I was getting at is simple, and it goes back to the original comment -- ( The following comment is not aimed at anyone in particular, its a general observation)
Many people dont or cant be bothered trying to figure out why something doesn't work sometimes. Theres nothing wrong with asking for help, NO ONE knows everything, but simply saying something is useless because they dont know the reason is the lazy way out.

1321461 2013-01-12 08:35:00 Edit to Above -- Where I wrote in #5 "you go into the device manager " , it should have Been "Disk Management".

I was thinking of something else.

Quickest Way in W8, open the charm menu on the right, click search, type in Disk Management - select it from the result in Settings - Open
