Too late though, there are too many around to be got rid of easily and people won't feel safe if criminals are armed and they are not. These stories are saddening, but it's hard to see any reasonable solution to the situation that makes them possible. I would like to point out New Yorks gun laws are probably not tougher than NZ's, you have to have a licence to own any weapon here (although it's easy enough to get one if you have no criminal record), military style weapons are illegal, semi-autos have very restrictive ammo capacity rules, and handguns need a special licence and can not be carried in public (well you cant really carry any gun around the streets). I believe as part of the requirements to own a handgun or have a collectors licence (for weapons not normally allowed to be owned) you must have a secure lockable metal storage unit bolted to the floor. Despite all this NZ has a very high gun ownership, mostly rifles used for hunting or by farmers, and shootings are relatively rare. We may be a bit quick to congratulate ourselves though, I think population density is a big factor in all this. |

What NZ needs is what Oz has a Shooters party which could control the balance of power in a government and make sure our gun laws are not made too restrictive as well. Criminals don't take any notice of the law regarding guns so why should legit gun owners be penalised? |
