1474692 2021-01-25 21:24:00 I have always called it a fire engine and it has been that way for the 75 years of my life, but just lately I have been hearing the Yank version, fire truck. We are not Yank! Let's have the Kiwi version - fire engine.

But then there was a story on the news recently where an interviewed fireman called it a fire appliance. So I would think that if the firemen who work in the business call it a fire appliance, then that is what we should call it.

So, a fire appliance it is.:)

1474693 2021-01-25 21:46:00 Appliance will be a PC, woke word so as not to offend the supporters of 'truck' or 'engine'. I'm betting bought in by the TV1 breakfast team on telly. allblack (6574)
1474694 2021-01-25 22:01:00 Same -- Always called and known as Fire Engine.

There's no reason for everything to change to how the Yanks say things.

I quite agree. Why do we need to copy the Yanks? We have our own languague and colloquialisms. Unfortunately the uneducated among us don't know any better and copy the Yanks.:groan:

1474701 2021-01-25 23:32:00 Possibly because the pre schoolers all learn the "Fire Truck" song at Early Childhood centres. It is in the same vein as "The wheels on the bus go round round round"

After 11 years of driving the little rugrats around, I know most of the littlies songs off by heart.

Ken :)
