| 1474570 | 2021-01-18 03:02:00 | Italy grows G3 (Sungold) under licence to Zespri and they have been selling Kiwifruit here for ages in our off season Interesting they are selling it here as a new Vine disease is going around in Europe that they don't know what it is ,must be very sure there is no risk but we have heard this before Wait till they start selling Chinese grown G3 here as there is 4000 Hectares illegally grown there without licence ,Zespri did remove over 100 Hectares before they got their hand Smacked |

Buy from your local fruit and veg if it bothers you...or grow your own. Not a fan of the green...prefer the yellow ones. |

Zespri breed the G3 variety (with others in the pipeline) They offer the right to grow by Tender here, last year the tender topped $500,000 a Hectare just to graft over to the G3 They will fly a Drone over your Orchard to map it and if found you have more than you are entitled too it's either removed or have to buy the extra licence They get good returns at the moment but for how long?, I used to grow the Green variety for 20 years |

Made an absolute killing selling plants overseas. It came back yo haunt home some years later when those overseas markets sold into the NZ markets at a cheaper price. We tried to tell him this would kill his market but he could only see the dollar signs. |

| 1474575 | 2021-01-19 21:57:00 | I think the idea of selling plants to overseas growers arose in the early days when NZ growers were trying to create a world wide market for the fruit. Apparently they thought that if it was only available in the NZ season, consumers would lose interest. The idea was to get northern hemisphere growers supplying northern markets in our off season to keep up the interest. If they were selling in our off season we wouldn't be in competition with each other. That is my memory of the logic at the time but I stand to be corrected. | John H (8) | ||
