| 1469559 | 2020-06-16 05:42:00 | Here's a slightly odd one. Another of my tech-challenged friends (I seem to have sooo many) has a Brother multifunction inkjet printer. All of a sudden it has disappeared from Windows. You can select it as a printer when you want to print, but the output never appears on the printer. If you look at the windows status window it shows the output as "printing", and then disappears, but that is the last we see of it. In Windows Settings/devices/printers and scanners, it doesn't show up on the list of printers. If you scan for printers it doesn't get found. If you install it manually it appears to go through the install process but still never appears in the list. On the printer itself you can print a status report, and also do a copy and get output, so there is nothing wrong with the basic mechanics. I've tried connecting the printer to another PC with a different cable and the same thing happens, which seems to point to a problem with the printer itself. We've also done all the obvious things like powering off and on (both PC and printer), with no improvement. I suspect it is going to be cheaper to buy a new printer than to try and get it fixed, but I wanted opinions on what might be happening and whether I've missed something obvious. It just occurred to me that I/she hasn't tried to a scan with a command from Windows (rather than directly at the printer), so I'll get her to see if that does anything. Other suggestions? |

I've also sent her Teamviewer, but I might try Remote desktop first. I've only ever used that between PCs on my network - how do I actually connect to a remote PC? |

The hardest part about Quick assist is getting the non tech person to open the program. Once you get the code you have 10 minutes to make the connection other wise you need to start again, and trust me some people push the time limit as they don't have a clue where certain keys are ;) Once connected you can stay connected for as long as you like, the longest I been is 2 hours. Here's what I do. I'll write it out with YOU being the helper - Them the one needing help. You -- While on the phone to the person, get them to open Search ( this can be hard for some) Tell them to Press the Windows Key + S (again they need guidance normally as to where keys are). You & Them - Tell them to type in "Quick" (spell it out, some cant spell) ;) Select Quick Assist 10389 You'll both get this window: 10390 YOU - click " Assist Another Person" - Sign in with any Microsoft Email Account, select Personal, you'll see it connecting 10391 then----- once signed it give them the 6 digit code over the phone and tell them to enter it in the box in the middle of the window - Then tell them to click "Share Screen" You'll then get the options - Select "Take Full Control & Continue" 10390 On their End they Will get a messages asking to Allow you to take control, tell them to Accept. That's it - you'll have their desktop. Its a once only code so once the connection is stopped if you need to connect again you have to start from the beginning. When finished simply close the Window. |

ME: "its between ctrl & alt on the bottom left" , nope cant find it . |

ME: "its between ctrl & alt on the bottom left" , nope cant find it . Once they have the program open the person receiving help only has to type in the 6 digit code and press share & allow, the helper does most of the work(and if they dont know what they are doing or able then they shouldn't be offering help). But yeah opening the program is the hardest part. Had one a few days back, these number haunt me now  :waughh: All they had to do was type in 266776 Bloody hell, after several goes they just couldn't get the numbers in the right order -- in the end instead of saying 3 numbers like 266 <pause> 776 I had to do it number by number. And then before that it was trying to open search, instead got just about every other damn option available, Start, Edge, MS Store, mail ( all along the task Bar) :waughh: Wasn't even game to open start down to Windows Accessories - Quick Assist Had one a few weeks back they swore blue murder there was no S or Q keys on the keyboard (win + q opens search as well) , even told them exactly where they were. oh the fun ;) |
