1474951 2021-02-16 07:28:00 It's not the explosion it's the lithium on fire, you've seen magnesium burn for instance.

Fully charged batteries are ready to burn with any distortion or bend in the packaging past a certain point; due to the short-circuited charged cell which will then go on fire, starting all its companion cells on the same path.

And just as a bonus, even if there is no fire, if you have to cut someone out, or pull cars apart, there is somewhere between 400v - 900v to deal with. :eek:

to be fair, just as many dangers cutting people out of crashed petrol cars , allways the risk of fire .
and the risks with airbags going off .
Allways will be dangers with cars .

Ive had a petrol car (Viva) catch on fire , while driving down the motorway .
PLASTIC airfilter box fell onto the exhaust manifold/pipes .

Plenty of fires with petrol cars . Its not just an EV issue , although petrol cars wont re-ignite several times after the fires put out .
We dont worry about fire risks with all the lithium batts in cheap devises thoughout our home or in our pocket .

That sort of thing was happening when I used to work on them at the local GM garage when they were new! :clap:clap

That is because not one of them can provide anything like the Volts or Amps of an EV battery. ;)

I can see some "Volunteer Fireman" trying to free someone with the "Jaws of Life". :eek:

Pretty much a non issue .
They dont run the EV power cables through the door pillars :)
Firemen will need training on how to deal with EV's though

Just what voltage do these EV's run on anyway ? Is it really HV ?

:lol::lol: Excuse my mirth .

Are you telling me that having a tangled mess with the potential of there being somewhere between 400v & 900v running around supported by 7616 cells is “Pretty much a Non Issue” . :eek:

And just for anyone interested, here are some statistics for the “Tesla S” which seems to have been made the benchmark among journalists .

1474958 2021-02-17 22:21:00 assuming proper training , pretty much a non issue . They arnt checking for live voltage with tongues , they will be fully kitted out with gloves & boots .
And being trained ( ha ), they wont being using water on or near EV crashes
The bigger issue is when it all catches on fire :)

30,000v ++ in petrol engines : again , a non issue
240v in many home campervans & some service vehicles

Actually, I've seen it stated that the only good way to extinguish a lithium battery fire is water.... lots and lots of water to a) remove the heat, and b) flood out the air feeding the fire.

There is a loop of heavy orange wire in Teslas near the door pillars which are actually there to make them easy access to deliberately cut, and they include tags to indicate they should be cut. It may be that the process of cutting them serves to blow a very major pyro fuse at the level of the battery pack, but I'm speculating there, but it seems reasonable that is the purpose.
