1474824 2021-02-09 04:57:00 Like a lot of politicians Shaw is not capable of joined up thinking. For example we ban mining coal and the use of gas in NZ but now have to import Indonesian coal to at great expense to keep our electricity generation going. We're going to get rid of fossil fueled vehicles without the faintest idea of how we can generate enough electricity to charge the batteries of all the electric vehicles that are to replace them. The Green Party kicked out the only real environmental members they had and appear to have been reduced to a lot of busy bodies who have no real idea about much at all.

My main concern regards electric cars are not so much about how to charge the batteries, moreso what will happen to all those batteries when they go flat/faulty. Will there be full recycling of all the chemicals etc, or will the discarded batteries be subtlely dumped somewhere discreet? I know that they can almost fully recycle Lead-Acid batteries, but what about Lithium-Ion and the various other types?
We used to think a majority of plastics were recycled, then it was discovered that only 1, 2, and 5 could be recycled. Where are all the other bundles of formerly recycled but now unusable plastic going to end up I wonder...

1474825 2021-02-10 06:31:00 I see on Top Gear tonight they featured electric vehicles with hydrogen cells. I think they may be the answer to many issues, but time will tell. Myth (110)

Actually, most of NZ's 'recycled' plastic goes into storage or actually gets sent to the dump.
No one wants it, we have no use for it .
Much of our recycling used to just get sent overseas to 3rd world countries (or China) , you can imagine what they did with it ( dump or burn it)

We will eventually get huge piles of old lithium car batteries , much like the piles of old tyres we have now.

1474827 2021-02-11 06:39:00 China was recycling some of it until recently when they realised it wasn't economical and were actually losing money on it overall. Agent_24 (57)

And we will still have the piles of old tyres probably bigger ones as the batteries weighing more than conventional vehicle engines are expected to wear out the tyres quicker than happens now.
