| 1475160 | 2021-02-20 01:14:00 | Helen (Piroska/pctek) is a fellow local here in Hawke's Bay, and a nice lady who I don't always agree with but respect her opinions. I also know whether she is maori or not but that surely is irrelevant? Ken ;) |

I remember as a youngster hearing family members complaining about Dutch immigrants who arrived after the war and had the cheek to talk to each other in Dutch on public transport. "They could be talking about you and you wouldn't know!" I thought such thinking was daft then and I still do. |

| 1475163 | 2021-02-20 22:40:00 | I remember the "joke" from those years which was about a Pommie immigrant sitting on the steps of the Post Office Savings Bank (in those days :) ) who was in tears as he was desperate to go back to England but was a quid short of the fare . A Kiwi bloke came up and kindly asked "what's wrong mate?" The Pommie told him he wanted to go back to England but needed a quid to get there! "No problem" said the Kiwi bloke, "here's three quid, take a couple of Dutchmen with you" Ken :) |

Just remember some of those clog immigrants had to leave Holland because they collaborated with the Germans and a lot came from the Dutch East Indies where they were very nasty colonizers until the Nips invaded. |

The whining noise carries on when the engines are stopped? Ken :) |

| 1475166 | 2021-02-22 19:55:00 | Well, I suppose well have to refer to her as Lady Piroska from now on? :D Wrong . It's from a fairy tale . Hungarian name for Little Red Riding Hood No I am not Maori . Yes prefect Hungary was on germanys side originally . The Austro-Hungarian EMpire and all that . . . Prime Minister Miklós Kállay engaged in peace negotiations with the United States and the United Kingdom . Berlin was already suspicious of the Kállay government . The German General Staff prepared in September 1943 a project to invade and occupy Hungary . The Kállay government took no preventive measures . Resistance would not have been hopeless . In March 1944, German forces occupied Hungary . When Soviet forces began threatening Hungary, an armistice was signed between Hungary and the USSR by Regent Miklós Horthy . Soon afterward, Horthy's son was kidnapped by German commandos and Horthy was forced to revoke the armistice . The Regent was then deposed from power, while Hungarian fascist leader Ferenc Szálasi established a new government, with German backing . In 1945, Hungarian and German forces in Hungary were defeated by advancing Soviet armies . As with all countries, not everyone agreed with the politics, my granddad certainly didn't, he was forced to go and was captured by the Russians in no time at all (many had no ammo at all) and then spent 10 yrs in a Gulag in Siberia . He did get let out though, many never got out . . . . Which is all one of the reasons my mum ran away to the other side of the world . I have a good friend from germany too, makes us all nazis does it? No . |
