101325 2002-11-25 09:13:00 Is it just me and my paranoia or is it just that everyone is out to get me?

To get to the point, it seems to me that now ihug has a product to limit spam (which I haven't taken up) that I am now getting heaps of spam which I never got before ihug had "the answer". Is anybody else noticing an increase in spam on ihug since their new spam busting program was available for hire?

101326 2002-11-25 09:39:00 YES!!

I spoke out about this some weeks ago.

I got spam two days after getting an account with them.
I dident hand my username to anyone at all.
I got spam with my full name at the top. (guessing usernames wont give full names to match)

did ihug sell my info? they say not.
did ihug get hacked? they say not.

I must say IHUG's spam filter did come about before it was needed.
A solution looking for a problem?
then ihug makes the problem to sell the solution?

I dont like to point finger at ihug but it does look that way to me........

101327 2002-11-25 09:46:00 Get mail washer --free . My daughter is delighted with the results from it-- some still sneaks thro but she has a lot less problem with it now. Prue prue (1413)
101328 2002-11-25 10:12:00 Download it from www.mailwasher.net

I once got spam in my ihug mailbox for a bit from a couple of sources...not sure if it was because it was an ihug account, but nonetheless, MailWasher took care of it, and haven't had spam since!

101329 2002-11-25 10:25:00 I have been with IHUG for years and never had a problem with spam until they started offering spam protection.
I am now getting the type spam which I never saw before and it does make you wonder why this has happened.

101330 2002-11-25 18:43:00 Try using a program called Mailwasher, it is available from www.mailwasher.net/

It is a freeware program, runs forever made by a kiwi programmer I believe from Christchurch, to get rid of the banner at the top a dontaion of USD20 is appreciated by the authour.

Easy to install and set up.

Once set up with your user name and log in, smtp's etc, make sure that OE remains closed and on that topic as soon as possible remove the tick from the options in OE to automatically check for and download mail.

Use mailwasher to log in to the mail server, it will come back with a list of available mail which will in the first instance be marked as Normal, Spam, Virus, Possible Spam etc. Go through and tick the Bounce Box against any mail you don't want downloaded, mail that is Ok, high light with the mouse and click on the Email Tab and add to Friends List.

When you are ready to download, click process mail and it will automatically open OE or other mail program as the case might be and download the remaining mail returning to sender the junk mail.

When Mailwasher is Minimized and OE is also open, Mailwasher will check for mail every 10 minutes and if it detects new messages it will pop up a small white envelope in the system tray, click that to see the messages and repeat as above to remove unwanted mail, if OE is open already, then still click Process Mail, that will bring up the OE screen but because OE is already open, straight away click Send/Receive to start downloading the mail.

Of course if iHug is selling your addresses bouncing them could be a fruitless excerise as iHug can just confirm that your address is still current but at least you are not having to download all the junk.

If iHug bring to your attention that using Mailwasher is in breach of your terms and conditions as some Isp's do because they have to process the bounced messages, then keep using Mailwasher as above but instead of bouncing all the messages as before, you can still delete the junk mail from the server instead.

101331 2002-11-25 22:19:00 odd...
maybe it's not a coincidence that all the 95% of my spam stopped when i killed my pugwash@ihug.co.nz address.

However, i had other IHUG address's that i very rarely used all of which got NO SPAM AT ALL.

Conclution?
I think i got spam on my pugwash@ihug.co.nz account BECAUSE i had been using that address for 5 years, and because people had been sending/forwarding "humour" to pugwash@ihug.co.nz and 40 other address's... I saw my own address in the great list of forwarded forwarded forwarded turn up on a friends computer sent by people i definatly did not know... and then one if the mow thousands of forwarded recipiants was a spammer/spammeraffiliate (which can mean someone with a trojan that sends all email address found in any computer to a spammers database) wham! Spam city = pugwash@ihug.co.nz

But it's so easy to blame the ISP for putting your public address out there.

Lesson 1.
Never give an email address you wish to keep to someone who doesn't know what the "bcc" field is for, but insists on sending bulk "humour" email.
