101270 2002-11-25 03:24:00 I am running Windows 98. Basically I want to clean up the whole system by blowing it away and installing Windows 98 SE. However I want to save everything I have on it like the drivers of all my hardware as I do not have them on me i.e my modem, scanner, printer and some software due to people helping themselves to my discs.
I have a cd burner which I will be using to store all my files as well. If I were to copy the user.dat and sys.dat files onto cd and then install 98 SE and copy those 2 files would that help??

I hope this all makes sense. Your help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

101271 2002-11-25 03:34:00 your best bet is find out which hardware drivers u don't have and go to their respective web site and download and burn them on to CD :)

don't forget th get your motherboard drivers if your system has onboard display and sound, scanner, printer and modem drivers shouldn't be a problem, if you can't locate a driver, This (http://www.driverpit.com/) might help :D

BTW don't forget to backup your favourite list, address books, emails things like that .. most people seems to remembered that they have forgotten to backup something after they formatted their drive...

101272 2002-11-25 03:49:00 user.dat and sys.dat are more likely to be harmful if you use them on a different version of Windows. If you are lucky, the system will crash immediately. If you are unlucky, it might not crash immediately.:D Graham L (2)
101273 2002-11-25 04:31:00 A combination of Norton Ghost and a CDR of drivers downloaded and my own files works wonders (CDRW).
Ghost is obtainable pretty pretty cheap now...
Note to NT/XP/2k users... u do not need lastest ghost version to work NTFS. U cannot work a disc to disc backup - u can do a partition to partition w/ no problem. Win9x/ME is not a problem.

Even do not have to re-register windows and office if it is extracted onto the same system.

101274 2002-11-25 04:39:00 I somehow don't think that saving your user.dat and sys.dat files will be sufficient, especially since you are planning to install Win 98 SE when those files belong to Win 98. You are probably going to have to either locate your CDs or find the drivers for your hardware on the net.

Incidentally, how are you going to install Win 98SE if the comp currently has Win98?
