2002-11-24 21:37:00 | I recently added added a Plexuscom ADSL Ethernet Router / Modem model ACC200 to our home network. Everything seems to be working fine exept for 'voice' in messenger. It appears that the router has some sort of firewall built in.... erm, I think. The url for the device is: www.plexuscom.com As this is new technology to me I don't really understand the specification.

2002-11-24 22:17:00 | Thanks Big John. But I'm not sure what you mean by 'pinholes'. What IP address do I need to set and do I do that in Messenger or the Router firewall. Also would it be easier to turn off the inbuilt firewall and just use software?

MSN Messenger uses these ports: Remote side ----------------- - 1863 (Text chat) (TCP-OUT) - 1024~65535 (Voice Chat) (TCP + UDP IN and OUT) - 80 (TCP OUT) - 6891~6900 (File transfer) (TCP IN and OUT) - 443 (SSL Authentication) (TCP OUT) Local side ------------ - 1863 (TCP-IN) This may have changed since the introduction of Messenger 5.0. Also, Windows Messenger may use different ports than the ones I mentioned. You should look at your router's user manual to see how to open/close ports. |

2002-11-25 01:21:00 | I've found a page for Virtual Server Configuration which contains boxes for ID, Public Port, Private Port, Port Type, TCP/UDP and Host IP Address. Is this what I need to change? | crozier (2004) | |
2002-11-25 19:01:00 | Sorry, but I'm not sure where I need to enter these figures. Can you please give me a bit more information :( .Les

2002-11-26 00:02:00 | Those are the ones you need to setup. You need to check which ports that messanger uses (should be on their web site somewhere) and then set these ports on your router. Not sure on what router you are using but you basically need to set it so that data coming in on a certain port goes through the router and gets routed to one specific IP address (ie that of your PC). Example if you PC's IP address is 192.168.0.1 and data comes in on TCP port 1536 you need to set up your 'virtual server' to send this data on that port to the IP above. It is simpler to do than explain.
