101026 2002-11-24 21:37:00 I recently added added a Plexuscom ADSL Ethernet Router / Modem model ACC200 to our home network. Everything seems to be working fine exept for 'voice' in messenger. It appears that the router has some sort of firewall built in.... erm, I think.

The url for the device is: www.plexuscom.com

As this is new technology to me I don't really understand the specification.

101027 2002-11-24 21:56:00 Its the router, It acts as a firewall so you need to set pinholes in it to allow it to send direct stuff through to a set IP address.
Other things affected are file transfer through ICQ, Gamezone does not appear to work properly either

101028 2002-11-24 22:17:00 Thanks Big John. But I'm not sure what you mean by 'pinholes'. What IP address do I need to set and do I do that in Messenger or the Router firewall.

Also would it be easier to turn off the inbuilt firewall and just use software?

101029 2002-11-24 22:42:00 pinholing means opening/closing ports on the router to allow traffic.
MSN Messenger uses these ports:

Remote side
-----------------
- 1863 (Text chat) (TCP-OUT)
- 1024~65535 (Voice Chat) (TCP + UDP IN and OUT)
- 80 (TCP OUT)
- 6891~6900 (File transfer) (TCP IN and OUT)
- 443 (SSL Authentication) (TCP OUT)

Local side
------------
- 1863 (TCP-IN)

This may have changed since the introduction of Messenger 5.0. Also, Windows Messenger may use different ports than the ones I mentioned.
You should look at your router's user manual to see how to open/close ports.

101030 2002-11-25 01:21:00 I've found a page for Virtual Server Configuration which contains boxes for ID, Public Port, Private Port, Port Type, TCP/UDP and Host IP Address. Is this what I need to change? crozier (2004)
101031 2002-11-25 19:01:00 Sorry, but I'm not sure where I need to enter these figures. Can you please give me a bit more information :(

101032 2002-11-25 20:07:00 I don't use an ADSL router so I can't help you out further... utopia (2200)
101033 2002-11-26 00:02:00 Those are the ones you need to setup. You need to check which ports that messanger uses (should be on their web site somewhere) and then set these ports on your router.
Not sure on what router you are using but you basically need to set it so that data coming in on a certain port goes through the router and gets routed to one specific IP address (ie that of your PC).
Example if you PC's IP address is 192.168.0.1 and data comes in on TCP port 1536 you need to set up your 'virtual server' to send this data on that port to the IP above.
It is simpler to do than explain.
