101599 2002-11-26 09:16:00 I am running Win 2000 on a PC and at some time in the last few months some conflict has developed in direct X and every time a game is run after a few seconds the computer shuts down.
It then has to be switched of at the waal and restarted.
Currently Running
DirectX 8.1, IE 6 with Sp1 and 2000 with Sp2 and keep geting then latest Windows Updates but cant find the cause of the problem.
Any Hints most welcome

101600 2002-11-26 09:25:00 Have you tried running the command "dxdiag" without the speechmarks under Start -> Run

See what errors are reported there.

101601 2002-11-26 17:12:00 Yes have tried Direct X diagnostics and it tells me there are no problems which of course is wrong.

101602 2002-11-26 20:25:00 How do you know its a directX problem?
is there any error messages?
what games does it do it in?
what video card have you got?
what drivers have you got installed?

101603 2002-11-26 21:28:00 2 Things I could think of, Try re-installing it, and Im also pretty sure there's an un-installer online somewhere (User it at your own risk). Otherwise, If you're game enough, Backup your data (Just in Case) and run the Beta of DirectX9.
I'd advise you try re-installing Dx8.1.

Cheers

101604 2002-11-26 21:39:00 now just to stirr things up a bit.........

DirextX is not ment to be able to be uninstalled. there are 3rd party uninstallers but use at your own risk. the last time i used one it required a windows reinstall to get everything to work properly.

useing MS beta software is ummmm.....well the final versions are buggy enough, i say no more ;-)

download directX again as there was a bug fix ver dubed directX 8.1b and also advaiable is directX8.2 which fixes a few problems with a few games(don't use unless you need to).

101605 2002-11-26 21:50:00 Hmm... Didnt know about 8.2
Yeah.. again.. use the un-installers at your own risk.
Beta should be a last-resort unless you're open to the fact that a PC format may be right around the corner.
Re-install 8.1 is your best bet - going with tweak'e on this one!

101606 2002-11-26 22:00:00 o sorry i forgot to add-

reinstalling directX won't work unless you are updateing to a newer ver. if the installer sees that you already have that ver of directX installed it will stop.

however it could be several things causeing that sort of problem so we may be barking up the wrong tree anyway.

101607 2002-11-27 17:17:00 Have to say that a hardware conflict was my first thought but the hardware has not changed in 2 years and the games all worked for the first 1.5 years or so.
I also have a son who is fairly brave about installing any game or demo found on free Cds or the web which made me suspicious of DirectX or a conflict between Direct X and some other package.
The game instillation has completely trashed the OS a couple of times in the past by installing prior versions of DirectX over the existing one. Some of the eairier game instalationsdont seem to fussy about that.

Hardware in reply to eairlier question
Win 2K SP2
P3 766 with 256 Ram

Matrox Millenium G4 grapics card 32mbRam

also
Scssi card,Int CD R/W,Int Cd R, Int Modem

but any sugestions welcome

101608 2002-11-27 20:47:00 try the directX but you may just need to reinstall video drivers. without know what game it is and if it uses dirextX or openGL its hard to tell. tweak'e (174)
