101668 2002-11-26 20:06:00 I'm thinking of partitioning my 40gb harddrive. I am running XP and will put SP1 on when I've backed up a bit more. I don't think I need another (2nd) OS.
So, the Q is, will I gain some speed if I do this? It doesn't bother me having one big hd, so it'd have to be quicker in some way for me to bother partitioning.

Thanks, Trev

101669 2002-11-26 20:26:00 If disk access speed is an issue you could try this:

c: 2gb for boot drive
d: 30gb (ish)for programs
e: 2gb - 4 gb for data
f: 300mb - 500mb for swap file
g: 200mb for internet cache

101670 2002-11-26 20:31:00 the main idea behind partitioning is kepping things organised.

also it makes maintaince a whole lot easier(defragging is a whole lot quicker).
if windows dies its fairly easy to format and reinstall without loseing all your data(as they are on the other partition).

XP requires about 5 gig. i would allow about 10 due to other programs that are more suited to be installed with the OS (eg office, nortons).

>f: 300mb - 500mb for swap file

if you do a swapfile partition it pays to have it at the front of the disk. otherwise its easier just to have the swapfile at the start of c drive.

>g: 200mb for internet cache

most internet cache is only 40 meg or so. IE exspecially has a big slow down if its to big and it really needs to be on a fast part of the disk.

for a more general setup-
c: 10gig(depending on OS) OS and programs that intergrate highly with the os.
d: 20gig main programs and data
e: 10gig mp3's/movies etc data that dosn't require high speed

101672 2002-11-27 09:55:00 I guess, I won't bother then, as I'm really only interested in getting the extra ounce of speed out of it and could probably do without even more places to go to, or the trouble involved with potential partition problems
I use diskeeper to defrag (which is pretty quick anyway)
I did play with Boost, which sounded like a good idea, but it didn't work...! (that's here, www.roninsg.com)
Most of my data is backed up Rw + zip drive

Thanks anyway guys
