| 101389 | 2002-11-25 19:37:00 | Hi Folks I'll be in Auckland later this week and am looking to buy an external, portable HD for use with my ThinkPad. Anyone have any recommendations as to where I can go to have a look and perhaps even buy one? I'm open to brands, but would especially like to know if the Lacie line is available somewhere in the city. Cheers David Dunedin |

It is usb 2 and firewire capable and backward compatible with usb1 Put in any 3.5 hardrive and you have instant external hardrive. I have a quantum fireball in mine (20 gig) and running through usb2 there is no noticeable difference to a 5400 rpm hardrive in transfer rates and seek times. Driver software supplied and it registers as a normal hardrive. $155 plus your hardrive and 5 minutes assembly. Good build quality and components. |

I bought a 60gig USB 2 drive ffrom them for backup at work - it is excellent (yes as I've said before) and I use it daily. From their website: Global Junxion 123 Manukau Road Epsom Auckland 1003 NEW ZEALAND www.globaljunxion.co.nz The drive I have was abuot $700 I think but come ready not a DIYer. I see on the home page they have an 80gig USB 2 model for $440 - bloody good value I reckon (no I don't workj there) |

| 101393 | 2002-11-26 08:30:00 | You can buy a ready made portable HDD from places like www.globaljunxion.co.nz or do it yourself. Basically, if you want to save on $$$, then get a 3.5" HDD enclosure with either USB2 or FW support and any 3.5" HDD of your fancy. Then just it up as per enclosure instructions. If possible, get an enclosure with a built in power adapter rather than external for portability reasons. However, if you want pure portability and you're willing to spend more $$$, then get a 2.5" HDD enclosure. However, not that 2.5" HDD only come in 4200rpm flavours and are MORE expensive than 3.5" HDD. But the good thing about 2.5" HDD enclosures (either USB1.1/USB2.0/FW) is that you don't need any external power source as it gets the power from the computer itself. As a general rule, building your own external HDD is cheaper than buying a ready made one. I made my external 80GB HDD (with a 7200rpm drive) for under $500 and it has both USB2.0 and FW connection and an internal power adapter. That was some months ago. It'll probably be even cheaper now. |

| 101394 | 2002-11-26 09:13:00 | why doh u consider a IBM Thinkpad 2nd HDD adapter ultrabay 2000. Then insert into ur laptop taking the cd/dvd out. true portability. or u can buy a Thinkpad ultra portable bay and insert into that and run via usb or PCMCIA. Rayonline |

| 101395 | 2002-11-26 09:16:00 | any of these 2 methods does not require a power source.. since it draws power from usb or pcmcia. u can access 2nd HDD on the plane and such if u wish. |

| 101396 | 2002-12-19 07:43:00 | Hi Ray! Even when you're in my office you're trying to convince me to swap my CD-ROM drive with another drive! And now here?! :) Thanks to everyone for their advice. I went with a 2.5" enclose from Dick Smith and a Fujitsu 20GB drive from Bill Leckie Computers in Penrose. Total cost: $370. Now I'm looking for some good backup software (and have just issued a post to this effect). David Dunedin |
