101876 2002-11-27 05:57:00 I have a xp home system Athlon xp 1600 with 512 mb p133 ram. would I notice a speed increase If I replaced with 512 DDR ram? My system board can handle it.
Thanks in advance.

101877 2002-11-27 06:18:00 Yes you would definitely. Since u r switching to DDR rather than adding more of SD ram ... Kenshin (2501)
101878 2002-11-27 07:35:00 I noticed a huge difference when I did that, but the experts report only a 10%(ish) gain. I believe it depends on the applications you're running. crozier (2004)
101879 2002-11-27 08:21:00 In mundane everyday applications you're not going to notice any appreciable difference. Photoshop, 3d rendering programmes such as max. bryce you will, though it's proportional to whatever you're doing and how memory intensive it is. Gaming would see a definite improvement using ddr but consider the cost of ddr first. 512 megs of ddr will set you back around $350 to $380. Is it it worth it to get a marginal increase in some apps ? If it is improved gaming performance buy an xbox for an extra $120 or upgrade to an xp 2100 cpu. I'm guessing your board is an asus ? the highlander (245)

I have to disagree here, I noticed a big difference when I changed to DDR.

His PC is far superior to an X-Box. Also there are huge differences between a console and a PC. The market is completely different. Isn't it a bit glib to be making such a suggestion? May I ask whether thses comments are from experience or from reviews?

Since he does not state what his video card is this remains a moot point and I certainly do not imply that an xbox is is any way superior to a well setup pc for gaming or occupies the same market. I don't believe suggesting that spending a considerable amount of money to gain marginal increases in performance is glib. My comments are based on truespace 5 and bryce 5 benchmarks I've run on my sons machine (Xp1800 on msi board with 256 meg sd ram) and his flatmates (Msi board xp1800 and 256 ddr ram) both have 7200 h/d and mx440 video cards. Render times on my benchmark scenes show a significant advantage under ddr especially when you are talking 3 to 4 hour render times. When it comes to everyday apps such as word, powerpoint etc you would have to refrain from blinking to notice the difference.

Did you change motherboard and memory or did you have a dual capable mobo ? What did you notice the big difference in ?

101883 2002-11-27 21:11:00 DDR RAM is Double Data Rate from what I understand.
Currently running at 133Mhz SD-RAM, If you were to upgrade to:www.qmb.co.nz
512 MB DDR RAM, you should notice quite an improvement, especially in 3D Gamin apps etc, if your Graphics card is up to speed.

It will set you back a fair amount thou (Almost 300 Dollars if you buy GMB, but other places upto $350 - So find a cheap place with a warranty).

You can then sell your current SD-RAM on Trademe. I know for a fact that I'd be happy to pay $80 for it, but any more and I could buy it brand new for a little more!

I'm actually looking into buying SD-RAM for a PC if you're interested... :)

The performance will be noticable (Should be noticable, especiallying in 3D Games), but do you really need it?

Cheers

101884 2002-11-27 22:25:00 I've to agree with Crozier here :) the performace of SD133 RAM are relatively slow as compared to DDR266 or DDR333. It's all about bandwidth. That's why RDRAM still provides the best performance even tho they are so expensive.

Remember those poor benchies on a P4 with SDRAM, I think if P4 didn't use DDR it would not have survived until today :D Since P4 + RDRAM means $$$ and P4 + SDRAM ...

Use Sandra to check out the bandwidth difference on each RAM

It was a dual capable motherboard, PC Chips 817LMR if memory serves.
The difference was noticable across the board from startup to general windows operation to MS Office and games. When I sold the motherboard I reinstalled the SD RAM and I was surprised by the reduction in general speed
