102176 2002-11-28 17:04:00 I have an XP Athlon 2000+ running in an MSI KT3 ultra motherboard.
I have noticed my CPU temp getting higher with the warmer weather. It's getting up around the 44 mark.
On the "PC ALERT" utility supplied with the mb there is the option of turning on "COOLER PC". BY USEING THIS MY TEMP drops to 31 degrees.
How does this work? Is it OK to leave it on permanantly? Wht isn't it automatiicly on?
Anyone got any ideas?
Jack.

102177 2002-11-28 23:53:00 I'm thinking that it limits the speed at which the CPU can operate, thus cooling it down. Or something to that effect.

Just make sure it's off when you play games/need full processing speed.

102178 2002-11-29 02:46:00 there are cooling programs (sounds like you have one) that basicly forces the cpu to wait when it detects cpu is idle.

if you notice no performance drop then leave it on permantly.

Yes, leave it on, but if you start feeling cold turn it off.

102180 2002-11-29 12:37:00 I understand that Athlons run hotter than Intel chips anyway so 44 is not really a problem. My Intel P4 runs between 28 to 34 C but when playing games it goes up to 38 to 40.
A friends Athlon runs up to 53 with no problems at all.

The cooler switch would not doubt slow the clock speed or insert wait cycles to cool the chip and thus slow the whole thing down. You may as well by a cheaper chip if you turn it on.

102181 2002-11-29 19:44:00 Thanks for sharing that Big John, I was wondering what the Intel chips normally run at. My one is currently sitting at 29 deg C and has been up to 33 on a warm day so far. It was averaging 23 on the cool days so room temperature does play quite a big part.

Will have to see what it is after a good Quake session soon.

I'm not sure that Quake I will have much effect on your new CPU Susan :p

102183 2002-11-29 20:30:00 Probably not Mike - be like taking a Sunday stroll in the park eh! :D

Better hurry up and get those games that came with the graphics card installed then. ;-)

But if I do that I'll lose my new PC to the kids. :-(

ummmmm......well no not really. the cooler programs only kick in when the cpu is idle. the actuall temp when playing a game will remain the same regardless. note- w2k & XP have it partly built in where as 9x/Me dosn't.
