102148 2002-11-28 09:19:00 I have a dual boot Win XP / Mandrake 9.0 installation. My PC Tel 56 K PCI Micromodem has no problem under XP, but I don't know how to get it working under Linux. Does anyone know if it's possible to use this modem, or should I give up and get an external Dynalink ??
Also I have a basic model of Genius Scanner, which is USB, but wasn't picked up during Mandrake installation, and I would like to know if I can use this. I am very new to Linux and would appreciate any help.
Thanks
Grant.

102149 2002-11-28 09:26:00 win modems you part of windoze file system to run utilizing cpu power.
They require the actual win OS to run so they are normally cheaper than hardware modems.
Don't know if you can use WINE to run it but might be possible. I'm in the same boat when it comes to hardware for Linux.

102150 2002-11-28 09:28:00 Hi

There is a FAQ up on the top right on Linux Q's. There are some good links/info on using winmodems and linux.

Cheers

102151 2002-11-28 09:54:00 Here is some more specific information on linux and winmodems:

Winmodems (www.modemdriver.com)

If you cannot find a linux driver for your modem, Dynalink 56K e-modem is linux friendly and was recommended to me by other forum members.

102156 2002-11-29 01:24:00 But that won't help Grant: he's got his computer and Winmodem already.;-) Graham L (2)
102157 2002-12-04 08:52:00 Thanks for the help. Sorry I've been away and have only just got back to F1 and see there have been some helpful replies. I am making my way through all suggestions. I have been told by the people who sold me my PC, that there are some drivers for this modem, but that they are written for 3 x different versions of red hat, so may not work with Mandrake 9.0 grantr (2660)
