102359 2002-12-23 05:23:00 Ok, thanks roofus. After your reply the other day I did change my mind, again:)
I am now haveing a system built up, I was going to build it myself but the shop said they would do it for free and it will be ready tomorrow lunch time. It will have ddr ram! And the graphics card I wanted. Doing it this way I saved some money on the speakers and keyboard and cd-writer that I didn't need. So I have a few questions about partioning and installing my software etc which I will have to pose later as my dinners ready now. I would be gratefull for any help available later.

102360 2002-12-23 06:36:00 Ok, I'm back. The system I am haveing built will have no software installed when I get it but will be ready to install windows. It will not have a cd rom fitted, but will have a floppy. I intend to fit my DVD drive off my old system. I have no installation disc with this however. So when I fit my DVD drive will the motherboard automatically recognize it so I can load windows?
I want to partition my HD before installing any software. Are there any free partion programs available for download online? My HD is 40G so I will install ME on 10 and save another 10 for XP maybe in the future. What would I use the other 20 for? I guess the partitioning would follow fitting the DVD drive, and I would download it with my old system, and hopefully it will fit on a floppy to install on the new PC even tho I have a cd-burner on the old PC. I want to leave the cd burner on the old machine for burning stuff I want to transfer too the new machine.
Then I guess I just fit the Windows ME installation disc and install ME.
So do I have the procedure sequence right?
Oh, first I would need to install the driver for my monitor with the floppy right? But what happens when I partition, doe,s it affect my monitor driver? And do I need to format my HD? How?
1) Fit DVD drive
2) Download and install a partition program for HD
3) Install windows
4) Install drivers for printer and scaner and game toys etc
5) Tweak the hell out of it!

102361 2002-12-23 07:34:00 DVD drive no problem it will run just like a cd drive.

>Download and install a partition program for HD

ranish. not 100% easy but better than FDISK and is free.

>BIOSTAR P4SDQ P4 All-in-one

why get an "all in one" when you have a decent vid card? go get a mobo that dosn't have onboard video (added plus is they are cheaper)

>Panisonic 1.44MB 3.5" floppy drive

not a fan of panasonic drives. the sony is far quieter and quicker.

102362 2002-12-23 09:10:00 Thanks tweak'e. I got that MB because it supported 512 FSB and came bundled with software which included Nortons Ghost, which I wanted. The other MB's in the same price range were only $30.00 cheaper and supported 400 FSB and came with software I did not want.
Don't really care about the floppy, almost didn't worry about it and got the cheapest. If I want I can swap with my old system anyway.
Really, where I got these components the prices were heaps cheaper than anywhere else, so I didn't have unlimited choice as far as MB went, but saying that I am happy with what I chose.
Will download ranish now, and hopefully there will be some instructions as per the correct procedures or I will be back.

Yes

As tweake said there are partioning progs out there. Fdisk comes with windows. So have a look at it. It is not very user friendly and you may need to play around with it to get it right. Just make sure you play around with it on your empty 40G and not your one with system files.
I believe you will need to make a startup disk from your present windows setup. Stick this in your new computer and run the computer then once its all loaded at the dos prompt type fdisk
after that all drives will need to be formated.
(note: fdisk will give you a max partion of 32G, but you will be ok as you have divided yours smaller, there are work arounds for this, but its not worth bothering about)

IF you want to keep your OS and system files from your previous setup, then use norton Ghost to transfer everything to your new PC. HOwever i'm sure you will want to go for a clean install of windows, to get max performance.

And thats about it really. I will check this thread around midday but then i will be away till boxing day. So i hope you have fun. Have any questions then just post them back in this thread (so people know what your talking about) and i'm sure someone experienced like tweake can help you out.
Have fun
p.s. Note that at this start of the thread you were asking if you should upgrade from 800mhz to 1G. You now have 2.4G's lol

102364 2002-12-23 20:29:00 Hee hee, thanks roofus, you have been a great help.
I was up to 3.00am studying different options online and think I may have my head around it all now. One idea that occured is to simply install my old HD into my new system (as I only have one monitor still) then I will basically be up and running straight away. Then I can play around with formatting and partitioning and a fresh install to my new HD and still have access to the net without constantly disconecting and reconecting the monitor. Still not sure how many partitions I should make though, but I have learnt to limit them to 8g.
Pick up the parts soon, so could be another all nighter :)
Merry christmas and thanks to everyone for all your help and advise.
