102349 2002-12-02 09:32:00 Hmmm... basically, it makes more efficient use of your processor, and allows even better multi-tasking... in layman's terms I guess?? Anyone want to correct me?

Do a search on hyperthreading... all new P4 chips will support this, and this is sort of the next "big" thing...

102350 2002-12-06 04:58:00 Ok, just got back from the computer store with my $1200.00 cash still in my pocket! When I outlined what I wanted as per post further above the salesman asked what OS I was useing. When I told him ME he says "Oh that would be to unstable, you want to get XP." This is after emailing the store to check that all the components would be compatible with my existing system and software. They had replied that I had chosen a very good upgrade option.
I told him I had no problems at all with ME and he said if I upgraded to the higher processor that it would be too powerful for ME and I would have to upgrade to XP. I had the feeling he was just trying to get more money out of me so I said "No thanks, I'll just upgrade when Longhorn comes out if thats the case" and walked out. So looks like I will just put up with my low framerates in CFS2 for awhile yet.

102351 2002-12-06 05:24:00 Someone's telling you porkies to get you to pay more... Lohsing (219)
102352 2002-12-06 05:35:00 Thats what I figured, anyway, I'm not going to give him my money now. He blew an easy sale if he did tell me porkies. I had the list of what I wanted and the cash in my pocket, all he had to do was hand them over and I would have been out of his shop in two minutes and he would have another $1200.00 in his till. 102353 2002-12-06 05:41:00 Yup... some retailers never learn... you should try someone else... get written quotes and play the 2 off against each other...

Usually shave at least $50 off the other guy!

102355 2002-12-22 08:01:00 For about another $50.00 I have found this:
Luxury Series
Professional Pentium 4 machine-1------$1189+gst - - (designed for performance)
Pentium 4 2000MHZ 2.0A, 512MB Ram, Elitegroup P4S5A/DX+ P4 motherboard 533Mhz,
MSI GEFORCE4 MX440 64MB AGP W/TV OUT, Maxtor 40G 7200rpm ATA133 HDD, Panasonic 1.44MB FDD,
40x12x48 CD Writer, Integrated 3DSound AC 97, 56k V92 Fax modem,
Tower Case with P4 300w power supply and USB in the front panel (Tom's hardware recommended)
with 1 extra system cooling fan, Multimedia internet k/b, Genius Netcroll optical mouse,
Shock A- 861 Subwoofer Speakers (wooden)
Upgrade Option:
CPU to Pentium 2.4G(533 MHZ) -$1269+gst
Video Card to Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 64Mb DDR + TV-out-for extra $59+gst

Then I'll basically have two systems to play with :) even tho I don't need some of the components like the keyboard and speakers. The optical mouse should be better for Amercas Army. And I would go with the Radeon video card upgrade but not the upgrade to 2.4G. That card should improve my framerates from my TNT right?
Haveing two systems would give me the chance to learn things like partioning and formatting, and I might turn my older system into an experimental linux machine and network it etc. What fun!
Haveing windows ME I believe I can use this on two computers, not like XP. And I could back up my data to the other PC's hard drive.
I think I have made the right choice, and might get it tomorrow (unless they have to build it still :(
Thanks for everyones helpful advice, I have been putting alot of thought into this for awhile but all your help has been invaluable.
Any further comments would be appreciated.

Merry Christmas

102356 2002-12-22 08:26:00 In regards to this system you are thinking of purchasing tomorrow. Ensure that the RAM is DDR. If its SDRAM then you have created a bottleneck for your nice fast procesor.
It would be like driving a porchse on a Toyota Starlets wheels!

Also this thread started with you not wanting to spend too much money. It sounds like you have suffered the techno gadget creep and have gone well over your previous budget.
I say if you really want this system buy it in 2 weeks time. That way you have thought about it, and got over the euphoria of the purchasing process.

102357 2002-12-22 08:52:00 Heh heh, thanks Roofus, good advice but really I hardly think I have rushed things. I did start this thread almost a month ago and now I am on holiday I have the time to actually do something with it.
The ram that comes with this system is 512 sdram, but the motherboard also supports ddr ram. So to keep the costs down I decided not too splash further at this stage on ddr. And I am sacrificing a bit on the card as well. Will it really create that much bottle neck? Must surely be better still than my PIII 800 with 384 sdram and tnt card! I really don't have much choice but to spend over a $1000.00 because of my dated motherboard which only supports 1 and 2 x agp. And then the guy at the store last time said that the computer will be to powerful for my ME so that maybe another expence, unless he is telling porkies like I believe. Really stuck between a rock and a hard place trying to play my games with my outdated motherboard.

102358 2002-12-23 04:21:00 Well running a 2ghz with SDram and WindowsME. Will definately result in you not getting full efficiency from your computers components.
However like you say it is going to result in a significant increase over what you have now. Especially in the area of the graphics card.

The Ram and OS are things you can upgrade gradually when you have the money.
WinME won't have a problem with your fast computer. Basically you won't receive the full benefits from your processor with ME as ME still has 16 bit archetecture whereas WinXP is 32Bit, and so will work better with the processor, however like you say the salesperson is lying because ME will run fine. It just means you will be taking a 5% performance hit from using ME over XP. and at 2ghz whos really gonna know the difference!
