102517 2002-12-01 22:14:00 Hey peeps,

I'm a bit software-illiterate :)

anyway, my problem is that I've gotten my own computer now, and would like to know how to save my emails in Outlook Express on the family computer, which I was using before i acquired my own, and then load them into OE on my computer? (If this is possible?)

Thanks :)

102518 2002-12-01 22:23:00 Try File > Export > Messages and follow the instructions.

The only problem may be transferring them from your old machine to your new machine. Are your PC's networked? Do you have a CD-Writer or portable drive (somewhere to store the emails to transfer them over)?

102519 2002-12-01 22:44:00 Yes, the PC's are networked, and both comps have a cd writer. My older brother tried to transfer the emails, thru the network connection, didn't seem to work (not that i knew exactly what he was doing, heh). I'll try the advice you gave me, now. Thanks caffy (2665)
102520 2002-12-01 22:53:00 No go with that . When i clicked on Export > Messages, it proceeded to export the messages to Microsoft Outlook .

So i tried the Save As option, to save the messages to CD, but you can only save one email at a time . Doing this would take days!

Any ideas from anyone else?

102521 2002-12-01 22:54:00 By the way, if the type of OS I'm using is a vital information in solving this problem, I'm using XP Pro... caffy (2665)
102522 2002-12-01 23:39:00 I've just had a bit of bother with doing this, transferring mine from Win 98/IE 5.5 to Win XP/IE 6.

No doubt someone will put me to shame by revealing a much simpler way but the only way I've been able to do it is find the *.dbx files in Explorer, copy them to a CD or floppy disk then find their counterparts on the new computer and put them in the same folder (ie replacing the ones on the new computer).

If you have folders additional to Inbox in your old OE you will have to recreate them in your new OE before dumping the *.dbx files into those folders in Explorer.

If this doesn't make sense just yell out and I'll be a bit more specific -- providing someone doesn't come along with a better way. :-)

102523 2002-12-02 00:02:00 I've successfully saved the emails from old computer. :)

When you say "replace the folders on the new computer" - if i do that, will it replace my emails in outlook express on the new computer? Or will the old emails be simply added to those folders alongside the new emails?

102524 2002-12-02 00:19:00 I think it will replace them with the files you have copied. I have done this before by exporting out of express, and into outlook, which will happen by default and then using the export in outlook to export to a pst file, and then import that into your new express. It is a long winded way of doing it but it does work. gregor_nz (2666)
102525 2002-12-02 00:31:00 Yo sis,

If you have saved the *.dbx files onto a CD, put that into your PC and go into OE. Then Import - Messages... Microsoft Outlook Express 6 - Import mail from an OE6 store directory and browse to the CD. You should then get a list of all the folders and you can select which ones you want to import.

102526 2002-12-02 00:45:00 When I do that, a window pops up saying "No Messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open. Please Select from another folder or try closing applications that may have files open."

Weird, as I am adamant I don't have any applications open that is using these files. And i have gone to My Computer (via Desktop) > F: Drive (where the dbx files are stored on CD) to check, and the folders are still there.

Another thing, when I click on the F: Drive to select folders to import - i.e where there is a square with a plus inside it, next to folders to expand it - it doesnt expand, meaning that there isnt anything there?
