When Winamp is playing I get a sound like fabric tearing from actions like minimising or maximising or deleting and other ordinary actions in W Explorer and on any page that I may be working on. But worse, frequently the noise turns into a stuttering tone that can sound like a repeated click or a repeated bell tone that pretty well blots out the music. It takes a re-start to get rid of it. Winamp works OK so long as I don't do any keypresses. I can't tie it to any one action. I don't think it did this before a recent re-install of Win98 which has had no other bad effects on the system. Hope someone can help with this. Cheers Ken. |

Sounds like the conflict I had with Zone Alarm and a vxd on my system. If by chance you have ZA, uninstall and delete all traces of it. Thats what I did to fix a similar problem. |

Check to see if your sound card is sharing an IRQ with something else. This can cause the symptoms you describe (especially with Creative sound devices). The cure is to rearrange IRQs to give the sound card it's own, unshared one. |
