| 102389 | 2002-11-29 08:36:00 | Will using the normal CD player cleaner (a CD with brushes on it) damage the cd writer's lense etc? Is there any alternative to clean cd writer's lense? Thanks :) |

The laser's do get old and tired though. I wouldn't use the brush type on anything, only disassembly and isopropyl alcohol. Its the mechanical damage with the brush type, its a very delicate assembly. Why do you think it needs cleaning? |

I figure that if they can invent the CD player and drive, then they'll invent something that can clean it without damaging it. I've never had problems with the brush-type. Mike. |

| 102393 | 2002-11-29 20:33:00 | Not all laser lenses can handle isopropyl alcohol. Plastic lenses can cloud over and that's the end of that!. My preference is a water based cleaner such as a proprietary domestic window cleaner that has a mild amonnia base to cut through film and/or grease. Even spectacle cleaners can be used, which do a great job on my glasses I might add! Nobody ever regretted being careful. Cheers Billy 8-{) :D |-{) (Me without my glasses) |

| 102394 | 2002-11-29 20:44:00 | Oh dear, just realised, I disagreed with God :O :O :O Sorry your deityness, I guess we have theological difference of opinion on the merits of cheap communion wine as a laser lense cleaner . Still, an openminded and forgiving God should be able to let one minor transgression go past without commiting me to purgatory and/or eternal damnation (BSODs from now until eternity, all with references to dead links in the MSKB) . Cheers Billy 8-{) :8} (With apologies to readers who dislike pseudo-religious humour and don't know about running gags or Godfather's almost omniscient power to diagnose computer problems accurately and first time up . ) |

| 102396 | 2002-11-29 21:38:00 | We can agree to disagree Billy! A quick confirmation using Google finds the first 20 hits all seem to recommend isopropyl alcohol, but some warn of using any glass cleaners that contain ammonia. They also warn that some solvents can affect any plastic lenses, but isopropyl alcohol is OK if it's at least 90% pure. That may be the key, if you have had an adverse reaction, the alcohol may have had other solvents in it. Chemists sell the pure stuff, its very cheap. |

| 102397 | 2002-11-29 22:43:00 | Yes, I guess we can agree to differ. I have not personally had a problem with isopropyl alcohol damaging plastics, however I always used the (supposedly) pure stuff. By the same token, I have never seen any plastic damaged by cleaners containing ammonia, but then I was not referring to heavy-duty industrial grease cutting solutions either. I have never had any type of plastic material damaged by domestic window cleaning fluids but there is always the glasses-cleaner option. Personally, I would always avoid anything that might be described as a solvent unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer. Cheers Billy 8-{) :D |

| 102398 | 2002-12-02 00:17:00 | Thanks Everyone, well this is the first time I heard of using isopropyl alcohol to clean a lense (I SEE). I just curious to know if the brush type cleaner suitable for the CD writer. From the above replied, I think I may have damage the lense my CD player as it started to skip more often than ever and little shock or impact could skip the music. I took the advice from those product (of course the brush type cleaner) that after an average music played for 10 hours should clean once. Cheers everyone. |
