2002-12-02 08:08:00 | a comman problem is the sb16 driver clashing with the ide drivers. check if the dma is enabled for the drives. apart from that it would be best to post details of your system.

2002-12-02 23:18:00 | I'll check the DMA, should it be enabled or disabled? Also my system is a Celeron 533, 196mb Ram, Gigabyte MB running Win98se. The problem of lockups and crashes has only started after installing the new sound and video card, and occures any old time but particularly when starting and stopping mpg's or shortly after playing them. I've tried using different players, and shifting the video card to a different slot. asdex

2002-12-03 05:17:00 | DMA should be enabled. if its not try diabling sb16 or set it to "allow lpt interupt sharing" make sure you have the correct motherboard drivers installed and removed the old video card drivers. i assume you have a pci video card. have you disbled the onboard video or are you running it as a dual video setup?

2002-12-03 07:59:00 | Thanks for your info. I'll try on thing at a time. I have allowed lpt interupt sharing. I see the DMA box is unchecked on the HD, I think I have tried that before and it caused some problems but it could have been something else. There's no onboard video on this MB and the card is AGPI shallcheck on the Gigabyte site for any later drivers asdex

2002-12-03 09:01:00 | yes it pays to tick the dma box for all your drives. that liitle bug of creative has toasted an install of mine when i forgot about it. hopefully you havn't had much data coruption.

2002-12-08 23:19:00 | Hi I found ticking the DMA on the hard drive crashes everything and stops the computer from starting. I'll try searching for drivers but I expect I got the latest on the CD as I only bought it a few months ago asdex

2002-12-08 23:23:00 | I hope the SB Live isn't sitting in next right to the AGP slot as they don't like that :) | SKT174 (1319) | |
2002-12-11 23:10:00 | We thats interesting, I'll have a look and see as I can't remember where I put it. I have found a later driver (i think) for the vedio card on the Nvidia site which I'm downloading. I've downloaded it twice now but get a size mismatch. I'll keep trying. Thanks asdex
